Job description
Job Summary
Working under the guidance of the General Manager, the Barista is responsible for various duties that contribute to the smooth operation of the café. They follow established service guidelines to ensure a great customer experience.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Primarily operates independently throughout the shift with occasional backup assistance.
- Manages café equipment and prepares coffee beverages, specialty drinks, bottled beverages, as well as baked and prepared food items.
- Ensures hygiene by maintaining cleanliness in accordance with local, state, and federal sanitation regulations.
- Performs daily and weekly cleaning routines for food surfaces, machinery, utensils, and customer areas.
- Stocks and arranges café merchandise following company policies, keeping merchandise areas neatly organized and clean.
- Greets customers warmly upon arrival and delivers outstanding service during transactions.
- Actively promotes point-of-sale initiatives and company programs like discount cards, pre-sale vouchers, and donation opportunities.
- Balances the cash drawer after shifts, adhering to Loss Prevention Policy parameters.
- Provides support to the bookstore team when necessary.
- Assists with additional tasks as required to ensure smooth café operations.

Qualifications and Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Successful completion of all mandated background checks
Preferred Abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Capable of multitasking efficiently
- Quick learner of multiple café machinery such as blenders, ovens, and espresso machines
- Familiarity with computers and cash register operation
Physical and Environmental Considerations
- Capability to stand and walk for long durations
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks using hands and arms, such as typing and telephone operation
- Physically able to lift or work with others to lift items up to 50 pounds
- Able to communicate verbally and visually, with or without assistive devices
- Comfortable performing movements including standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, and crouching during daily job functions
