Job description

About Sea-Flux

Sea-Flux develops a SaaS platform dedicated to maritime vessel safety and compliance. Their browser and cross-platform mobile applications assist vessels and crews in maintaining safety and regulatory standards on the seas. Founded by seafarers, the New Zealand-based company aims to revolutionize the maritime industry globally with their trusted technology.

The Role

Seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a close-knit AI-focused team of five engineers in Takapuna, Auckland. This full-time role requires presence in the office four days weekly, with remote work on Thursdays. Applicants must already have New Zealand work rights, as sponsorship is not offered.

The successful candidate will be a full-stack expert capable of developing React Native applications as well as managing Firebase and Google Cloud infrastructure. Beyond coding, you will make impactful technical decisions, design solutions, and own projects throughout the complete development lifecycle.

Key Skills and Expectations

The team prioritizes strong communication of context, meticulous risk assessment, and making informed decisions. Clear briefing of stakeholders, peers, and AI coding agents with complete situational information is fundamental to avoid errors in a fast-paced environment.

As part of an AI-first engineering group, the role involves extensive use and leadership in employing coding agents such as Claude Code across development, testing, and review stages.

A background in DevOps or platform engineering is highly valued, contributing to improvements in build, deployment, and system reliability practices.

Daily Activities

  • Develop and maintain React Native apps powered by Expo and back-end Node.js services including Firebase Cloud Functions and NestJS.
  • Take full ownership of feature development—from planning and risk analysis through to production deployment.
  • Enhance platform integrity by managing CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, observability tools, backups, and recovery processes.
  • Employ AI coding tools consistently to accelerate delivery while upholding code quality standards.
  • Introduce changes carefully, particularly in shared or cross-cutting systems.
  • Participate in code reviews, mentor colleagues, and address technical debt.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering leadership on technical strategy and product direction.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Authorization to work in New Zealand without visa sponsorship.
  • Daily hands-on experience using agentic coding tools like Claude Code.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript along with Node.js and React/React Native frameworks.
  • Direct responsibility for operating production systems including CI/CD, infrastructure as code, disaster recovery, and observability.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with DevOps or platform engineering, particularly cloud production environments.
  • Knowledge of Firebase and the Google Cloud Platform ecosystem.
  • Experience delivering features powered by large language models, including prompt engineering and output evaluation.
  • Native mobile app development skills on iOS or Android beyond React Native.
  • Strong user experience and interface design acumen.
  • Maritime industry or seafaring domain experience.

Working Approach and Culture

  • Effective, clear communication tailored to various channels and audiences.
  • Sound judgment and risk evaluation in decision-making on incomplete data.
  • Complete ownership of shipped work, including AI-generated code under the same scrutiny as manual coding.
  • Ability to recognize limits of AI agents and apply sound judgment on their use.
  • Drive team productivity by developing agent instructions, tests, and checks for AI-generated work.
  • Architectural thinking encompassing system boundaries, data flows, and failure modes.
  • Capability in NoSQL data modeling (Firestore) with awareness of relational data needs.
  • Breaking down ambiguous problems into clear, actionable plans.
  • Treating operability aspects like monitoring, rollbacks, and runbooks as integral to features.
  • High standards on code quality, type safety, and prioritized testing effort.
  • A collaborative spirit focused on mentoring and uplifting team members.

Additional Information

  • Claude Max subscription provided to all engineers to support AI-driven workflows.
  • Annual training budget to encourage ongoing professional development.
  • Office located in Takapuna with convenient transport links, cycle lanes, and scenic views.
  • Weekly team morning tea fostering camaraderie.
