Job description
About Open
Open is revolutionizing the insurance industry with an AI-driven platform focused on enhancing transparency, affordability, and customer-friendliness. Since its inception in 2016, Open has expanded across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, earning certification as a B Corporation. The company prioritizes innovative engineering to convert strategy into impactful software that serves partners and customers alike.
Role Overview
As one of the initial engineering hires in the UK, you will join the team responsible for implementing and maintaining integrations with UK partners. You'll contribute directly to Open Embedded, a flagship product that allows businesses to embed various insurance products inside their own customer journeys using a no-code configuration system managed by Open.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver UK-specific partner integrations from requirements gathering to live deployment.
- Work closely with partner needs to configure and extend the platform or identify gaps that require new development.
- Engage in technical discussions with partner engineers and manage follow-up actions independently.
- Provide transparent progress updates to your team to avoid unexpected delays.
- Continuously reduce the timeframe between partner onboarding and journey activation.
- Collaborate using AI agents to enhance workflow efficiency across design, coding, review, testing, operations, and debugging.
- Leverage AI tools to automate routine partner support tasks such as triage and initial diagnostics.
- Implement AI deployment patterns that ensure safety and regulatory compliance in a highly controlled environment.
- Contribute insights and improvements based on your experience with AI-enabled workflows back to the team.
- Maintain platform availability and health for UK operations, sharing responsibilities like incident response and on-call rotations.
- Author clean, test-covered, and well-documented code that others can confidently maintain.
- Coordinate with TechOps, Solution Architecture, and InfoSec on issues such as reliability, security, and data residency regulations for the UK and EU.
- Analyze feedback and incidents from partners to inform continuous platform improvement.
Candidate Profile
This position demands a versatile engineer who thrives in a small, high-trust team and values ownership and broad responsibilities over narrowly defined roles.
Unsuitable candidates might be those who:
- Prefer strictly defined tasks and fully detailed requirements without shaping input.
- Require greenfield projects instead of extending and modifying an existing platform safely.
- Want to specialize strictly in one technical layer without cross-functional involvement.
- View AI simply as an autocomplete tool rather than integrating AI agents deeply into their workflow.
- Avoid direct interaction with external partners' technical teams.
- Seek a large engineering team environment where roles are compartmentalized.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- At least 3 years of experience developing and maintaining production-grade software used by real customers.
- Strong full-stack capabilities with deeper expertise on one end of the stack and competency on the other.
- Able to understand and safely enhance large, existing codebases.
- Experience with integrating and debugging third-party APIs, with understanding of contracts, retries, and idempotency.
- Proficient in Python and comfortable working with modern AWS cloud services running in production environments.
- Knowledgeable in modern frontend technologies such as TypeScript and component-based frameworks, emphasizing high-quality user experience.
- Practically AI-native, incorporating AI agents in daily work and able to demonstrate their impact.
- Accountability for shipped software across construction, deployment, and maintenance phases.
- Familiarity with modern CI/CD methodologies preferring frequent, reversible incremental updates.
- Excellent communication skills for clear and timely PR descriptions, design documentation, and incident reports accessible to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Good judgment in balancing scope by delivering minimum valuable iterations while identifying larger problems.
- A proactive mindset focused on early issue detection, root cause resolution, and driving improvements in simplicity, speed, and safety.
Preferred Experience
- Background in insurance, fintech, or regulated financial services industries.
- Roles involving partner-facing integration or solution engineering alongside core product teams.
- Exposure to configurable or no-code platforms, especially in embedded insurance or white-label partner scenarios.
- Experience with AI/ML system deployment, including safety practices such as evaluations, red-teaming, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
- Familiarity with cloud-native data warehousing solutions such as Snowflake and the associated analytics/AI data layers.
- Working within distributed teams across time zones collaborating with central engineering groups elsewhere.
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Work Arrangement and Location
This role is based in London, United Kingdom, with a hybrid working model requiring approximately three days per week in the office to support collaborative culture and team trust, while providing the flexibility to work remotely for the remaining days. You will interact regularly with Sydney-based colleagues and the core engineering team, joining scheduled calls and coordinating efficiently across time zones.
Eligibility
Candidates must hold the legal right to work in the United Kingdom.
Why Join Open?
- Competitive salary with share options, reflecting fair compensation and shared success.
- High degree of autonomy and trust to empower your best work.
- Opportunities for professional growth with roles that can evolve with your development.
- Flexible working practices centered around impact rather than hours at a desk.
- Freedom to work from various locations balanced with responsibility.
- Paid parental leave supporting all parents balancing career and family life.
- Annual personal development allowance to support learning, well-being, and growth.
Additional Information
The insurance sector ranks among the least digitalized industries, traditionally burdened by complex and paper-based processes. Open is driving digital transformation with three major products: Open Embedded enables insurance purchase directly within business apps, Open Agentic uses AI to assist customers in policy selection and questions, and Open Intel identifies moments when insurance coverage might be necessary to engage customers proactively.
Diversity of thought and experiences is valued highly, so applicants lacking some criteria are encouraged to apply and communicate any accommodation needs during the selection process. Open seeks courageous, curious individuals eager to challenge limits and build the future of insurance.
