Role Overview
The Director of Cloud Engineering will oversee strategy, operations, security, governance, and financial management of Magnet's cloud platform and shared engineering services. Collaborating with various departments such as Engineering, Product, Security, Compliance, Finance, and Go-to-Market teams, this leader ensures the cloud infrastructure supports rapid innovation and adheres to stringent standards of reliability, security, compliance, and cost effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and implement a comprehensive cloud platform strategy aligned with Magnet's SaaS products and business goals.
- Drive operational excellence initiatives including service reliability, observability, incident response, disaster recovery, and governance.
- Collaborate with engineering leaders to ensure scalable and highly available cloud services.
- Manage cross-team projects to enhance platform consistency and engineering efficiency.
- Set architecture standards and engage in technical governance and architectural reviews.
- Ensure platform readiness for security and compliance frameworks, including FedRAMP and similar regulations.
- Collaborate with Security and Compliance teams to establish secure-by-default policies and controls.
- Lead vulnerability management and security remediation efforts within the cloud platform.
- Assess emerging regulatory and sovereign cloud requirements to support global clients.
- Oversee cloud cost governance, budgeting, and optimization initiatives across the company.
- Develop transparent cloud financial management practices, partnering with Finance and Engineering leaders.
- Implement automation tools to enhance forecasting precision and cost visibility.
- Balance technology innovation, performance, and cost control through strategic frameworks.
- Champion responsible AI adoption by evaluating, operationalizing, and governing AI-related platforms and tooling.
- Strategize monitoring and management of AI infrastructure and spending.
- Identify and drive AI-enabled opportunities for productivity and operational enhancements.
- Manage vendor evaluations, contract negotiations, and relationships for cloud providers and engineering tools.
- Recruit, mentor, and lead high-performing cloud engineering and platform teams fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Enhance developer experience by minimizing friction, improving tooling, and enabling self-service capabilities.
- Create an environment facilitating efficient, reliable software build, deployment, and operation.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or related fields.
- At least 5 years in leadership roles involving engineering managers or technical teams.
- Extensive experience with public cloud platforms, especially AWS.
- Expertise in building and operating private cloud infrastructures.
- Proven ability managing large-scale SaaS platform operations.
- Strong knowledge of cloud security, compliance, governance, and risk management.
- Experience in cloud financial oversight including budgeting and cost optimization.
- Successful track record leading strategic cross-functional initiatives.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Experience negotiating and managing technology vendor agreements.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, SOC 2, ISO 27001.
- Background in platform engineering or developer experience leadership.
- Knowledge of AI/machine learning infrastructure and operational best practices.
- Experience leading identity and access management programs.
- Understanding of cloud reliability engineering and observability.
- Experience in fast-growing SaaS company environments.
Compensation & Benefits
The annual salary range for this role is $200,000 - $250,000 CAD. Actual compensation may vary by location and candidate qualifications.
