Senior Frontend Engineer - Accessibility in Design Editing

Overview

Join a dynamic team dedicated to revolutionizing global design experiences. This role is based in Sydney with a flexible hybrid working model that balances remote work and on-campus collaboration in a thoughtfully designed space located in Surry Hills.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement accessible user interactions within the Editor, encompassing focus control, keyboard navigation, live regions, and accurate ARIA roles and states that mirror the product's behavior.
• Use screen readers regularly during development to test, debug, and ensure accessibility compliance, with practical understanding of VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS variations and real-world behavior.
• Collaborate closely with fellow engineers in the Editing Group to help integrate accessibility from the outset by reviewing designs and pull requests and guiding technical solutions to accessibility challenges before release.
• Identify systemic accessibility deficiencies and create architectural solutions addressing root causes rather than temporary fixes.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Proven commercial experience designing and delivering accessible web applications adhering to WCAG standards with practical judgment in implementation.
• Hands-on expertise with screen readers including knowledge of VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS technical behaviors and quirks for debugging purposes.
• Ability to navigate and contribute to a complex, interconnected frontend codebase with a component and state management architecture, treating accessibility as an integral design aspect.
• High proficiency in TypeScript and React with a strong understanding of component architecture as it relates to accessibility.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of bridging technical understanding across engineering and design teams to foster accessibility awareness and solutions.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with WAI-ARIA authoring patterns for complex UI widgets such as trees, grids, drag-and-drop, and dialog interfaces.
• Background in making advanced interactive elements accessible, including streaming interfaces, real-time UI, HTML5 canvas, data visualizations, spreadsheets, and WYSIWYG editors.
• Familiarity with browser and native accessibility APIs, understanding of the accessibility tree and platform-specific behaviors.
• Exposure to accessibility features powered by artificial intelligence.
• Experience with mobile accessibility frameworks, especially React Native.
• Prior collaboration with accessibility specialists, assistive technology users, or accessibility-focused user researchers.

Team Environment

The Editing Accessibility team operates within a larger Design Experience group focused on creating the world's most accessible design tool. The work involves close cross-functional collaboration and tackling substantial accessibility challenges, including live collaborative editing and complex rich text screen reader support.
