Job description

Role overview

This part-time receptionist position supports front-of-house activity within the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Derby Hospital. The rota runs across a six-week cycle and includes weekend shifts.

What the role involves

You will be the first point of contact for patients, relatives, and visitors, helping to ensure every interaction is handled with professionalism, warmth, and care in a busy environment.

  • Register patients and keep records accurate and up to date.
  • Handle queries by telephone and in person.
  • Support clinical colleagues with day-to-day administrative tasks.
  • Maintain a welcoming reception space for patients and visitors.
  • Work across several IT systems to capture the correct information.
  • Manage filing, scanning, and upkeep of patient notes.
  • Liaise with patients, families, and wider teams through phone, email, and face-to-face contact.
  • Use initiative, stay composed under pressure, and switch between tasks efficiently.

Skills and personal qualities

The ideal person will be organised, flexible, motivated, and confident in a demanding clinical setting. Strong communication, interpersonal, and administrative ability is essential, along with the judgment to think quickly and multitask effectively.
