Job description

About the Organisation

GovTech is Singapore’s lead government technology agency, supporting Smart Nation efforts and the digital transformation of the public sector. As the Centre of Excellence for ICT and Smart Systems, it builds capabilities across data science and AI, application development, smart city technology, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity.

The organisation offers a mission-driven environment focused on improving lives through technology, with strong emphasis on learning, development, agile ways of working, and collaboration. Its work centres on designing digital services with citizens and businesses at the heart of the experience.

Role Overview

The team is hiring a Data Scientist to independently lead data science work across multiple use cases. This role requires end-to-end ownership of projects, from problem scoping and solution design to deployment, monitoring, and ongoing improvement, with only limited supervision.

What You Will Do

  • Work independently on data science tasks and deliver outcomes with minimal oversight from the data science manager.
  • Lead scoping conversations and convert business needs into technical and analytical solutions.
  • Explain technical ideas clearly to stakeholders with different levels of seniority and technical background.
  • Build, refine, and deploy ML/AI solutions that improve performance and scale effectively.
  • Compare and assess multiple approaches systematically to solve complex business problems.
  • Design scalable solutions using cloud services and good engineering practices.
  • Create and maintain data pipelines, as well as LLM/MLOps workflows that improve efficiency and lower operating cost.
  • Deploy models into production and support them with monitoring, alerts, and maintenance processes.
  • Apply responsible AI principles and help identify and reduce ethical and governance risks.
  • Take ownership of your work, address issues proactively, and support teammates when needed.
  • Align day-to-day work with team priorities and broader business value.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture through collaboration, open knowledge-sharing, and constructive handling of disagreements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, Quantitative Social Science, or a related field; relevant certifications such as Coursera may also be considered.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in data science and/or the public sector.
  • Ability to turn business use cases into analytical problems and identify the right data sources.
  • Strong scripting skills for data preparation and analysis using modern analytical tools and programming methods.
  • Experience cleaning, imputing, and correcting anomalies in structured and unstructured data.
  • Ability to explore datasets using probability and statistical techniques to uncover insights.
  • Capability to build machine learning models for pattern recognition and prediction.
  • Good understanding of design principles and data visualisation best practices.
  • Ability to create visualisations ranging from simple charts to customised tools and apps integrated with data systems for real-time display.
  • Skill in translating analytical findings into practical recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate findings and business impact through clear, compelling data storytelling.
  • Interest in improving public services and delivering public value through analytics and data.
