Role Purpose
This position is responsible for overseeing and operating key plant systems such as the boiler, turbine, generator, balance-of-plant equipment, switchyard, and transformer area to ensure efficient performance and correct start-up and shut-down procedures. The role also includes monitoring and operating the Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) system, supporting equipment upkeep, encouraging energy efficiency, and ensuring compliance with environmental requirements.
Key Responsibilities
The role covers control room, lead desk, lead FGD, and switchyard engineering responsibilities.
- Track the performance of boiler, turbine, generator, BOP, and electrical systems to keep plant operations stable and efficient.
- Carry out plant start-up and shut-down activities whenever required.
- Continuously watch operating parameters and act quickly if any value deviates from the norm.
- Conduct regular equipment changeovers and test emergency drives as part of routine operations.
- Respond to emergencies involving the boiler-turbine-generator system and coordinate the required corrective action.
- Handle switchyard and grid-related emergencies to reduce operational disruption.
- Ensure equipment is safely isolated and returned to service as per operational or emergency requirements.
- Run FGD operations and monitor the associated process parameters.
- Keep plant logbooks complete, accurate, and updated.
- Support energy conservation efforts with attention to Specific Oil Consumption, Auxiliary Power Consumption, DM water usage, and Heat Rate.
- Monitor important chemistry values to support environmental compliance and plant efficiency.
- Operate and supervise FGD systems to lower emissions and meet environmental regulations.
- Follow IMS, AWMS, DISHA, and CHETNA guidelines within the department.
- Protect the safety of people and equipment through training and disciplined adherence to safety practices.
- Work strictly as per Permit to Work requirements and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Report plant defects and operational issues promptly to the shift in charge.
- Support digitization initiatives that improve operational effectiveness.
- Contribute to automation efforts aligned with business objectives.
- Recommend and implement process improvements, newer technologies, and innovative approaches.
Internal and External Stakeholders
Internal coordination will be primarily with maintenance engineers. There are no specified external stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
A Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or a related discipline from a recognized institute is required. The role calls for at least 3 years of experience in power plant operations, ideally in thermal power plants. Experience in the power generation sector, especially thermal power, is preferred.
