Role Overview
As the Data Platform Engineering Manager, you will lead and guide the Data Engineering team responsible for building and maintaining Cover Genius's Data Platform. This role requires an experienced leader with hands-on expertise in designing and delivering cloud-based data platforms, strong SQL and Python programming skills, and a focus on balancing robust delivery with platform reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and nurture a team of Data Engineers, promoting a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and ongoing improvement.
- Manage the design, development, and operation of scalable, efficient data pipelines aggregating data from various sources including SQL databases, APIs, and real-time streaming.
- Create and drive the strategic roadmap for the Data Platform technologies such as BigQuery, Airflow, dbt, and Dataflow, ensuring scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency against KPIs.
- Implement and uphold best software engineering standards like CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, code reviews, testing protocols, and observability to ensure sustainable high-quality outputs.
- Develop strong data governance, security, and privacy frameworks to ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
- Collaborate with Data Analytics, Data Operations, Data Science, and Product Engineering teams to build effective data models that support business performance measurement.
Required Experience and Skills
- At least 7 years in Data Engineering with a minimum of 2 years in leadership or management roles within fast-growing environments.
- Strong track record in implementing data quality, observability, and testing practices within data teams.
- Hands-on experience with data warehouses such as BigQuery, Snowflake, or Redshift, and orchestration tools like Airflow.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and solid Python coding skills focused on scalable, dependable data solutions.
- Expertise in Data Modeling and warehouse optimization strategies including clustering, partitioning, incremental dbt workflows, and caching to improve performance and reduce processing costs.
- Familiarity with streaming and event-driven architectures (e.g., Google Pub/Sub, Kafka, CDC tools) is advantageous.
- Experience managing cloud data platform operating costs, including capacity and slot management.
- Knowledge and practical experience with AI-assisted development methodologies to enhance team productivity and code quality.
