Job Overview
The Anesthesia Technician supports licensed anesthesia providers by managing the preparation, maintenance, and operation of anesthesia-related equipment, supplies, and medications throughout anesthesia administration or procedural sedation. This position operates under the supervision of a certified anesthesia professional.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver anesthesia-related services to patients under direct oversight of a licensed anesthesia provider.
- Maintain and organize anesthesia equipment, ensuring cleanliness, disinfection, stocking, and scheduled upkeep.
- Manage inventories of anesthesia medications, supplies, and apparatus to meet procedural demands.
- Prepare patient monitoring instruments and anesthesia delivery systems before, during, and after anesthesia procedures, adapting to patient age-specific requirements.
- Set up for regional anesthesia techniques such as epidural, spinal, and caudal blocks, along with preparations for central line, dialysis catheter insertions, and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks or vascular access.
- Troubleshoot anesthesia monitors and equipment basic issues, escalating any malfunctions or defects appropriately.
- Adhere to established departmental and safety policies, including quality improvement, infection control, and environmental protocols.
- Under supervision, prepare, administer, and monitor medications and intravenous fluids relevant to anesthesia practice.
- Operate medication dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis) in the operating room, ensuring accurate medication dispensing and inventory control.
- Assist in intraoperative patient positioning and airway management.
- If assigned patient monitoring duties, demonstrate competency in monitoring physiological parameters, responding to complications, administering reversal agents, and evaluating recovery criteria.
- Foster effective collaboration with anesthesia department staff, nursing teams, surgical and technical personnel.
- Identify and report safety issues within the work environment promptly.
- Provide education to patients and their families regarding health conditions, treatments, and preventive care when applicable.
Additional Organizational Responsibilities
- Perform all tasks aligning with the organization's patient-centered care philosophy.
- Contribute proactively to continuous improvement efforts within the scope of responsibilities.
- Follow safety protocols vigilantly and address any safety hazards proactively.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive and private information encountered during professional duties.
- Comply with cybersecurity policies, actively participate in training and preventive initiatives relating to cyber threats.
- Observe organizational codes of conduct, policies, and ethical standards rigorously.
- Complete all mandatory training at least one month before expiration deadlines.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a tertiary care healthcare facility.
- Educational qualifications include either BSN-Diploma with anesthesia technician certification or a Bachelor of Nursing with specialized anesthesia assistance training.
- Proficiency in English is required; Arabic language skills are preferred.
- Necessary licensing as per regional health authorities (e.g., SCFHS, DHA) along with certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Computer literacy capable of managing relevant equipment and records.
