About the Office of the Supervising Scientist
The Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) operates within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and is dedicated to safeguarding the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, specifically concerning uranium mining impacts. The OSS conducts environmental research, monitoring, regulatory oversight, and develops standards for environmental protection.
Role Overview
This position provides key technical assistance to the OSS by managing equipment, infrastructure, and resources, while supporting environmental monitoring and research projects across the Alligator Rivers Region and Kakadu National Park.
Core Responsibilities
- Assist in the upkeep and installation of 12V electrical systems.
- Operate small trailer boats safely on inland waterways.
- Drive 4WD vehicles and Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) in off-road conditions securely.
- Conduct servicing of scientific equipment.
- Collect and process water samples following established protocols.
- Offer logistical help to scientific personnel during fieldwork activities including stream gauging.
- Perform maintenance duties on OSS vehicles, vessels, and facilities, including cleaning and safety checks.
- Support communications and engagement efforts with local Aboriginal communities.
Additional Requirements and Working Conditions
- Possess or be able to obtain a current Apply First Aid Certificate.
- Hold or be eligible to acquire a coxswain's licence.
- Maintain a current manual driver's licence and be proficient driving 4WD vehicles.
- Hold a valid Australian motor vehicle driver’s licence.
- Relocation assistance may be negotiable.
- The job entails a mix of outdoor fieldwork and office tasks.
- Required to complete various mandatory and refresher trainings, including remote area, defensive driving, first aid, and CPR courses.
- Frequent travel to remote and isolated locations in northern Australia and nearby regions using diverse transportation such as vessels, light aircraft, helicopters, and manual 4WDs.
- Work may occur in challenging, remote, and harsh conditions, sometimes for extended durations, either independently or in a team.
- Wear an official department uniform during field activities as per departmental policy.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and attire to adhere to workplace health and safety standards.
