Position Summary

This role assists the Store Manager by handling daily operational tasks to ensure seamless thrift store functions, and also serves as a sales associate when necessary.

Job Responsibilities

  • Engage with customers and donors courteously and positively.
  • Safeguard the integrity and condition of all donated goods.
  • Accurately process customer transactions including cash and debit payments.
  • Help achieve store budget goals by maintaining high customer service standards.
  • Open and close the store adhering to prescribed procedures when needed.
  • Manage raw materials by unloading/loading, sorting, packing, pricing, and storing donations.
  • Maintain knowledge of inventory to respond to customer inquiries both in-person and over the phone.
  • Monitor store activity vigilantly to ensure security.
  • Handle merchandise safely and methodically; assist in rotating stock.
  • Participate in inventory control through receiving, sorting, and pricing donations as directed.
  • Assist in creating attractive store layouts, including window and merchandise displays, ensuring tidiness and appeal.
  • Replenish and remove inventory from sales floor based on supervisor guidance.
  • Ensure all donated items are sorted and processed according to quality standards.
  • Keep the store organized and clean by tidying shelves, cleaning, dusting, sweeping, and mopping as needed.
  • Comply with all store policies and procedures.
  • Help with inventory reconciliation tasks like cycle counting.
  • Provide excellent service to guests and donors at all times.
  • Serve as Team Lead or Acting Supervisor for store associates during the Store Manager's absence.
  • Provide on-the-job training and demonstrate operational procedures to staff as required.
  • Maintain a safe workplace by adhering to Health & Safety regulations.
  • Fulfill other assigned duties related to the role.

Relationship Management

  • Internal: Coordination with NRO Administration and The Salvation Army management and staff.
  • External: Interaction with donors, clients, and contractors.

Reporting

  • Reports directly to the Store Manager.
  • This role has no direct reports but may provide guidance or training to others.

Financial and Material Responsibility

  • Responsible for moderate handling of store materials.
  • Occasionally manages petite cash transactions.

Working Conditions

  • Permanent full-time position in a retail store environment.
  • Requires frequent physical activity including standing, walking, lifting up to 30 pounds without assistance, bending, twisting, and pushing.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and varying temperatures is common.
  • Must adhere to established deadlines and handle interpersonal conflicts effectively.
  • Work involves a mix of varied and repetitive tasks.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of some high school education.
  • Minimum two years experience in a store or warehouse setting.
  • Alternative education and experience combinations may be considered.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work cooperatively in teams.
  • Physical capability to frequently lift/carry 30 pounds unaided and perform various manual tasks.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to pass required background and screening checks.
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting The Salvation Army's mission.
  • Compliance with health, safety, and OH&S regulations.

Salary and Accommodation

The pay range for this role is $18.25 to $22.23 hourly, with a top rate of $26.20 based on candidate qualifications and market factors. Reasonable accommodation is available upon request.

This job is based at the Sydney Thrift Store, 2455 Beacon Avenue, Sidney, British Columbia, V8L 1X7.
