Job description

About the Role

A Specialist Roofing Contractor located in the North West of England is looking for an Estimator to join their team based in Greater Manchester. The firm specialises in roofing solutions for new-build projects, refurbishments, and large-scale construction, focusing on residential and commercial sectors. Their core values emphasize technical expertise, excellent craftsmanship, and durable long-term outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the full tender process from identifying suitable opportunities to estimating, submitting bids, and following up with clients.
  • Evaluate new enquiries by logging details, assessing project fit based on client, location, scope, and status, and informing clients whether tenders will proceed.
  • Prepare detailed tender documentation including quantity take-offs, material pricing, rate calculations, bill of quantities, annotated drawings, tender schedules, and cover letters to meet submission deadlines.
  • Hold weekly estimating progress meetings with senior pre-construction staff to review active bids, pipeline status, submission timelines, risks, and capacity.
  • Follow up with clients after tender submission to gather outcomes, arrange clarification discussions, and obtain feedback on unsuccessful bids.
  • Coordinate monthly meetings with supply chain partners to discuss specifications, target projects, pricing strategies, products, innovations, and new developments; document minutes and track action items.
  • Analyze live project price-to-cost data comparing estimated margins to actual performance for continual pricing refinement.
  • Report opportunity forecasts and pipeline metrics to pre-construction management during monthly performance reviews.
  • Conduct lessons learned exercises on unsuccessful tenders to identify areas for improvement in pricing, scope, schedule, or submission quality; recommend process enhancements.
  • Attend industry trade shows and continuous professional development events to remain informed on regulations, product innovations, trends, and competitor activity; share insights within the company.
  • Manage Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) coordination, ensuring timely and comprehensive responses across departments within two weeks of receipt.
  • Oversee pre-construction handovers to operations and relevant teams by compiling project cost budgets from accepted tenders and briefing design, procurement, and planning departments on requirements.
  • Conduct surveys and investigations alongside suppliers to support tender accuracy as needed.
  • Represent the company during post-tender and pre-award negotiations to clarify scope, schedule, and pricing, working to secure contract awards.
  • Support commercial claims for changes or variations by providing original tender pricing documentation and relevant scope records.
  • Maintain pipeline intelligence by sourcing project lists from suppliers, monitoring public procurement platforms, registering interest, and liaising with clients for referrals.

Additional Information

The role includes a salary of up to £50,000 annually, with a car allowance and additional benefits. While roofing experience is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement for this position.
