Job description
Role Overview
Working under the guidance of the Principal, Custodian Supervisor, Facilities Director, and Chief of Operations, this position involves routine cleaning and upkeep tasks within school facilities and grounds. The custodian ensures all equipment is in working order and supports students, staff, and visitors with custodial needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the building is secured and checked at both the start and end of shifts to maintain safety and cleanliness.
- Clean various areas including classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, and stairways according to district standards.
- Maintain floors by sweeping, mopping, buffing, stripping, and waxing.
- Clean carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, and window blinds.
- Wash walls, ceilings, wood trim, windows, doors, and sills; remove graffiti and clean glass surfaces.
- Replace light bulbs as necessary.
- Arrange and dismantle furniture and equipment in meeting and functional rooms.
- Clear snow and ice from entrances and walkways; apply sand and ice-melting substances.
- Perform groundskeeping tasks such as debris removal and overall grounds maintenance.
- Receive deliveries, assist unloading trucks, and organize supplies.
- Distribute materials to designated areas within the building.
- Empty trash bins regularly and aid in recycling efforts.
- Carry out additional cleaning and repair duties, especially during school breaks.
- Assist visitors and parents during special events and programs.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications and Experience
- A high school diploma or equivalent experience sufficient to perform the required duties.
- Prior experience in building maintenance and cleaning is preferred.
Equipment Used
Utilizes various hand tools and powered equipment such as brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mowers, and other trade-related tools.
Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to safety protocols including proper use of tools and equipment.
- Wear appropriate protective gear including masks.
- Comply with the chemical hygiene program and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Work tasks may require lifting over 50 pounds occasionally and frequent lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Perform duties in both indoor school environments and outdoors under various weather conditions.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, waste materials, pollens, and other environmental factors.
- Tasks may demand climbing ladders or using lifts, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and visual acuity.

- Ability to make evaluations and decisions based on observation and judgment.
- Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with students and school personnel.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Capability to follow oral and written instructions and coordinate work with supervisors.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Basic mathematical abilities including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of measurement units.
- Physical capability to perform assigned tasks safely and efficiently.
Travel Requirements
Occasional travel between different schools or between schools and the central office might be necessary.
