Job description

About the Role

MongoDB is seeking a Senior Product Manager to lead the scalability efforts for its Atlas data platform, a key system supporting high-demand applications including real-time gaming, financial transactions, and AI workloads marked by unpredictable traffic. This crucial role entails ownership of the end-to-end product experience for scaling Atlas clusters, covering vertical scaling, autoscaling, horizontal scaling (sharding and shard key strategy), and the related operational workflows, aimed at ensuring reliable, trustworthy performance for customers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a clear, firm vision and strategy for Atlas cluster scalability, translating these into prioritized product initiatives for each release cycle.
  • Manage the comprehensive product roadmap for all scaling dimensions including vertical scaling, autoscaling, horizontal scaling, and their operational and monitoring aspects.
  • Make decisive prioritization calls, including rejecting initiatives even if supported by customers or leadership, and own the outcomes of these decisions.
  • Gain deep technical knowledge of Atlas scalability internals such as instance tier mechanisms, autoscaler algorithms, sharding, balancer functions, and capacity planning to inform product requirements and engineering tradeoffs, aiming for proficiency within two months.
  • Confidently represent product strategy to senior engineers, field partners, and enterprise customers, maintaining your stance when challenged.
  • Maintain close engagement with customers and field teams to comprehensively understand pain points, common failure scenarios, and critical trust-building moments.
  • Define key success metrics for scalability, develop analytics to detect issues early, and use data-driven insights to make informed product decisions even amid uncertainty.
  • Lead collaborative cross-functional efforts involving engineering, design, documentation, support, marketing, and sales teams to deliver reliable and high-quality scaling solutions that enhance adoption.
  • Mentor junior product managers, contribute to broader strategic product initiatives, and influence leadership-level decisions despite having no direct reports.
  • Be accountable for measurable year-over-year improvements in Atlas scalability performance based on agreed metrics.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of product management experience with technically sophisticated infrastructure products; experience in databases, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Proven track record of managing enterprise-grade technical products end-to-end, delivering quantifiable customer and business impact.
  • Strong technical literacy capable of engaging on architecture, system failure modes, performance tradeoffs, and correlating technical choices to customer outcomes, with a rapid ramp-up to deep understanding within two months.
  • Experience taking products from initial creation through growth phases, scaling from concept to mature adoption.
  • Customer-focused with regular direct engagement with customers and field teams, effectively translating feedback into clear product requirements and strategic decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills crafting high-quality written and verbal materials adapted to diverse stakeholders including executives, engineers, and customers.
  • Strong analytical aptitude with experience defining metrics, implementing and troubleshooting analytics, and leveraging data insights to guide decisions while balancing judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make prompt decisions with conviction in ambiguous situations, effectively managing scope and standing by difficult choices despite opposition.
  • Interest in participating in activities supporting Go-to-Market, Marketing, and Sales enablement processes.

Preferred Experience

  • Direct hands-on experience with databases, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure (compute, storage, networking, capacity planning).
  • Prior ownership of developer tools, infrastructure platforms, or enterprise-critical SaaS products.
  • Familiarity with autoscaling, capacity planning, sharding, or similar elasticity challenges in any technical domain.
