Role Overview

The Senior Data Engineer will combine expertise in data engineering, architecture, and modelling to support customer and marketing data solutions. You will collaborate closely with business and product teams as well as group data functions to translate customer challenges into technical solutions, providing leadership throughout project lifecycles. Your role encompasses shaping architecture, guiding engineering standards, mentoring team members, and evolving the customer data platforms supporting loyalty and CRM across New Zealand and Australia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize modern data pipelines, products, and customer data solutions utilizing Databricks, Snowflake, and Azure technologies.
  • Collaborate with Group Data Architecture teams to support data architecture and high-level solution designs.
  • Develop scalable data models addressing customer, loyalty, CRM, and marketing technology initiatives.
  • Engage with business stakeholders to define problem statements and create actionable data-driven solutions.
  • Deliver reliable, secure, and high-quality production-grade data platforms with governance and observability features including monitoring, lineage, logging, and automated quality controls.
  • Contribute to setting technical direction, engineering standards, and architectural decisions within the team.
  • Provide mentorship and support capability enhancement for Data Engineers via coaching and knowledge sharing.
  • Adopt and champion modern engineering practices like Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, and automation.
  • Collaborate across cross-functional teams to drive impactful customer outcomes.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven experience delivering complex modern data engineering solutions in enterprise settings.
  • Expertise in Databricks and Snowflake platforms, with the ability to evaluate and work across multiple data technologies.
  • Advanced skills in data modelling and engineering disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of data architecture principles and cloud data services, notably Azure Data Factory and Data Lake.
  • Proficient in SQL and Python for building scalable and reliable data pipelines.
  • Experience with Terraform, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Knowledge of data governance, security, operational excellence, and observability principles.
  • Effective collaboration skills, influencing architects, engineers, and business stakeholders.
  • Track record mentoring engineers and driving team capability uplift.
  • A customer-focused mindset with aptitude for translating business challenges into scalable data solutions.

  • Competitive salary package ranging from $117,000 to $155,500 per annum plus 15% short-term incentive based on company performance.
