About Trade Me and the Role

As the Engineering Lead - Data, you will lead the Data Platform squad, overseeing 7 engineers across junior to senior levels. You will uphold the squad's technical standards, coach the team and ensure the successful delivery of the Snowflake-based AI, personalisation, and analytics platform. This role involves driving innovation in how Trade Me utilizes AI in data workflows rather than migrating or building existing infrastructure, which is already established and operational.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day leadership by managing, mentoring, and resolving blockers for 7 engineers within the Data Platform squad.
- Shape and manage how the squad operates, including ceremonies, team health and psychological safety, and defining clear accountability for delivery.
- Maintain high technical standards via code reviews, overseeing dbt transformations, programming in Python and SQL, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and observability practices.
- Leverage Snowflake AI tools such as CoWork and Coco to enable business self-service and uphold standards for AI-assisted development using Claude Code.
- Take end-to-end ownership of the squad’s roadmap, quarterly deliverables, and incident management.
- Collaborate with the Principal Engineer and Principal Product Owner to align architecture with customer and stakeholder requirements.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives as a member of the Data & AI leadership team, influencing Technology, Data Science, Security, and Architecture directions.
Experience and Skills Required
- Over 10 years in data engineering or related fields, including significant senior or principal contributor roles and strong team leadership experience.
- Hands-on expertise with Snowflake, dbt, SQL, and Python, plus experience working with modern orchestration technologies.
- Proficient in SQL-first data transformation, dimensional modeling, and establishing analytics engineering methodologies.
- Experience with cloud data platforms and orchestration tools such as AWS or GCP, Airflow or Prefect, and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
- A strong AI mindset, familiar with agent-driven coding (Claude) and Snowflake AI capabilities.
- Proven ability to lead engineering teams within an agile framework effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, product teams, and executives.
