Senior Data Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking Senior Data Engineers to lead the development and delivery of enterprise data solutions that enable effective decision-making, analytics, and AI capabilities within the organization. You will have a significant role in shaping the modern data platform and engineering standards at NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), providing mentorship to data engineers and championing technical quality across teams.

This is a pivotal moment in the agency's digital and data evolution. You will design, build, and maintain data platforms, pipelines, and products that contribute to improved transportation outcomes for New Zealand.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and implementation of enterprise-scale data solutions supporting analytic and AI needs.
• Influence the development and continuous improvement of NZTA's modern data platform and engineering best practices.
• Coach, mentor, and develop data engineering talent, fostering a community of practice that elevates organizational capabilities.
• Collaborate widely across squads, programs, and stakeholders to ensure data products and pipelines meet current and future requirements.
• Balance hands-on technical task execution with strategic leadership to maintain platform scalability, security, and reliability.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates are seasoned data engineering professionals with a passion for tackling complex problems and driving technical excellence. You thrive at the intersection of strategic initiatives and practical delivery, with the ability to communicate effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders.

• Extensive experience designing, building, and operating enterprise-level data platforms and pipelines.
• Advanced skills in SQL and Python programming, particularly with Databricks environments.
• Proficient in modern cloud-based data solutions, familiar with Lakehouse and medallion architecture frameworks.
• Proven ability to create solutions that support analytics, business intelligence, machine learning, and AI applications.
• Strong foundation in engineering practices such as DataOps, automation, observability, and operational excellence.
• Deep understanding of data governance, security, privacy, and regulatory compliance.
• Skilled at influencing and collaborating with multiple squads and technical disciplines.
• Experience managing technical debt, balancing delivery demands with platform health and sustainability.
• Excellent relationship building and communication capabilities, translating business needs into technical designs.
• Dedication to mentoring colleagues and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and engineering quality.

• Competitive salary ranging between NZD 133,632 and 163,328, depending on experience and skills.
