Job description
Overview
Join GFL - Sewer Technologies Division located in Thomaston, GA as a Helper responsible for supporting waste collection operations to ensure efficient and safe disposal services.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect solid waste and recyclable materials from customer premises or curbside.
- Load solid waste into the rear or side compartments of the collection vehicle.
- Separate recyclables and load them into designated compartments on the truck when applicable.
- Assist the driver by guiding vehicle maneuvering and backing up safely in constrained areas.
- Operate equipment on the truck to compact collected materials.
- Perform vehicle equipment audits before leaving the branch, verifying presence of tools such as brooms and shovels.
- Immediately report any customer-related concerns to the driver.
- Identify and tag prohibited waste items, notifying the driver and removing them from carts.
- Adhere strictly to safety standards and company regulations related to vehicle operation and equipment handling.
- Collaborate with supervisors to improve route efficiency and maintain established quality standards.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment at all times during work.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with customers or the public.
- Help keep the vehicle clean inside and out and assist with sorting, cart cleaning, warehouse organization, pallet stacking, can placement in roll-off containers, and operation of cardboard compactors as needed.
- Participate in safety and branch meetings and perform additional tasks as directed by management.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED is preferred but not mandatory.
- Some prior related experience or training (1 to 3 months) is desirable but not required.
- Holding a valid driver’s license is beneficial but not a strict requirement.
- Must meet company safety-sensitive function criteria.
- Basic literacy and communication skills.
- Capability to follow instructions and work independently with limited supervision.
- Proficiency in operating necessary job equipment.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift during outdoor operations most of the workday.
- Use hands and fingers, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and maintain balance as required.
- Must have good vision capabilities including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Capable of lifting up to 65 pounds regularly and pushing/moving up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to loud noises, varying weather conditions including extreme heat, humidity, rain, and cold, as well as toxic substances and airborne particles.
- Work primarily outdoors with constant exposure to motor vehicle traffic.
- Frequent work in remote routes from the branch location and occasionally in precarious locations.
- The environment is typically loud and requires vigilance.
