Job description

Company Overview

Murphy AI specializes in AI-driven voice agents that assist banks and other industries in collecting overdue debt. Their platform focuses on optimizing debt recovery by employing respectful, personalized communication through multiple channels including voice calls, messengers, email, and SMS. The company’s AI adapts in real-time to maximize recovery rates while ensuring compliance and trust.

Role Overview

As a Data Scientist at Murphy AI, you will be responsible for developing the core machine learning models that determine the contact strategy—deciding who to reach out to, when, through which channel, and how often—to maximize debt recovery within stringent legal constraints. Your work will guide the behavior of AI agents and directly influence the company’s operational strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and own the strategy for contacting debtors, including timing, frequency, and communication channel selection such as voice or WhatsApp, ensuring adherence to legal limitations.
  • Create propensity and uplift models that predict debtor behavior—such as likelihood to answer, pay, or respond to specific scripts or offers—and use these insights to segment debtors for AI intervention.
  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments including A/B tests and multi-armed bandits focused on optimizing timing, cadence, voice characteristics, and negotiation policies to improve recovery outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and commercial teams to align models and strategies with business goals and continuously improve key performance indicators.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

  • A degree in mathematics, statistics, machine learning, computer science, or a closely related field is required.
  • Strong foundation in probability, statistics, experimental design, and causal inference, with the ability to discern genuine results from noise.
  • Deep commitment to quality and precision in AI, ensuring automated solutions are reliable and rigorously validated.
  • No prior experience in collections or fintech is necessary; the ability to rapidly understand the domain, data, and regulations is valued over prior domain expertise.

Essential Requirements

  • At least 2 years of professional experience deploying machine learning models in production environments that demonstrated tangible improvements in business metrics, such as ranking, pricing, or contact strategy models.
  • Expertise in Python programming in production settings, capable of taking models from conceptual stages to deployed code, including monitoring and maintenance. The technology stack includes Python, TypeScript, AWS, and PostgreSQL.
  • Proficiency in statistical methods relevant to experimental design and causal analysis, capable of accurately measuring the effects of interventions beyond correlation.
  • Experience designing, conducting, and interpreting A/B tests or bandit algorithms in live environments and implementing successful outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate model-driven insights into clear, defendable recommendations for diverse stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive salary positioned at the top of industry benchmarks.
  • Equity options with significant long-term growth potential.
  • High degree of ownership and influence over Murphy’s strategic direction.
  • Small, dynamic team environment with substantial autonomy and impact.
  • Direct interaction and mentorship from the founding team within a growing market sector worth over $300 billion.
  • Flexible work arrangement with a hybrid setup: three days in the office and two days remote per week.

Recruitment Process

  1. Initial conversation focusing on your background and motivations.
  2. Technical interview with the hiring manager and team members to discuss skills and scenarios.
  3. Practical assessment or business case relevant to Murphy’s challenges, allowing thoughtful demonstration of abilities.
  4. Final interview with the company founders to explore company vision and fit.

Murphy AI values diversity, inclusivity, and equity, fostering an environment where all perspectives are welcomed and respected to drive innovation and success.
