Role Summary
The Senior Software Engineer will develop key features for Roku's platform user interface, focusing on creating high-performance applications and SDK components for a widely-used consumer electronics platform. This role offers significant visibility and business impact, contributing to almost every streamed experience on Roku.
Team Dynamics
The team prioritizes enhancing the user experience through cross-device features, TV and player-centric UI, and IoT integration with Roku OS. Engineers work autonomously yet collaboratively with various teams, balancing individual initiative and teamwork to innovate in the streaming media landscape.
Use of AI
Roku incorporates AI tools and agents to streamline workflows, including coding aids like Claude Code and Cursor. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience using AI-assisted programming techniques to accelerate development and improve output quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with product development, platform services, and release teams to advance embedded UI development and architecture.
- Integrate external C++ libraries into the platform.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues within the Roku platform.
Candidate Profile
- Proven experience in software development, particularly shipping quality software on embedded platforms.
- Strong expertise in C++ programming and Embedded Linux or native application development.
- Deep familiarity with Linux environments, tools, and open-source development methodologies.
- Experience with AI-assisted coding practices.
- Knowledge of API design principles and trade-offs.
- Bonus skills include familiarity with Boost, PlayReady, ALSA, DIAL libraries, memory management, multithreading, OpenGL, DirectFB, and media streaming technologies.
- Experience in embedded systems and consumer electronics is advantageous.
- Ability to estimate development tasks accurately and adhere to schedules.
- Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related field.
