Job description

Role Summary

We are seeking an Onsite Software Engineer to join our team in Wellington, New Zealand. This position involves working directly within our client’s Contact Centre setting, serving as a key technical expert for our critical Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. The role blends software engineering, systems administration, technical support, and customer engagement to maintain and enhance system reliability, security, and performance.

This is not a conventional office-based role; you will collaborate closely with operational teams to troubleshoot issues, analyze system functions, implement improvements, and drive the continuous development of a platform that supports essential services 24/7.

Successful candidates will be technically adept, curious, customer-oriented, and passionate about problem resolution. You will be part of a collaborative environment where innovation and contributions that impact client success are highly valued.

Important: Applicants must pass a National Police Check and commit to participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the main onsite technical liaison for Octave solutions within the customer environment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to applications, infrastructure, databases, networks, and systems.
  • Guide installation, configuration, deployment, commissioning, and maintenance processes.
  • Monitor performance and identify ways to enhance system stability and reliability.
  • Perform software updates, patches, and system enhancements.
  • Ensure system uptime and efficiency in a 24/7 mission-critical setting.
  • Analyze application behavior using logs, database queries, and diagnostics.
  • Resolve problems by reviewing production code, integrations, and data flows.
  • Support continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes and release management.
  • Maintain data accuracy, system integrity, and consistency across environments.
  • Suggest technical improvements, promote automation, and establish operational best practices.
  • Engage with customer stakeholders to understand workflows and requirements.
  • Deliver exemplary customer service and clearly communicate technical topics to varied audiences.
  • Identify recurring challenges and develop long-term solutions to improve customer experience.
  • Create clear technical documentation including reports, standard procedures, and knowledge base articles.
  • Participate in project delivery and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least three years of experience in software or application support, systems engineering, DevOps, or comparable technical roles.
  • Background supporting business-critical or client-facing applications.
  • Capability to read, understand, and troubleshoot live production code.
  • ITIL Foundation certification or equivalent operational support expertise is advantageous.
  • Readiness to engage in a 24/7 on-call schedule and occasional travel as necessary.

Technical Expertise

  • Experience in Application Support, Software Engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Technical Consulting.
  • Proficiency in programming or scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, JavaScript, C#, or Java.
  • Knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Understanding of REST APIs, JSON, XML, and related web technologies.
  • Familiarity with Windows Server and Microsoft-based environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, release management, and deployment workflows.
  • Basic networking, authentication, virtualization, and cybersecurity knowledge.
  • Competency with monitoring, logging, observability, backup, and system management tools.
  • Familiarity with ITIL or similar service management frameworks.
