Job description
About Black Forest Labs
Black Forest Labs is the innovative team behind groundbreaking technologies such as Latent Diffusion, Stable Diffusion, and FLUX that have transformed the creation of images and videos globally. Their advanced FLUX generative models support millions of creators, developers, and businesses worldwide. Headquartered in Freiburg, Germany, with a growing presence in San Francisco, the company values research excellence, open science, and empowering human creativity.
Role Overview
The Developer Experience Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the entire developer experience on the Black Forest Labs platform. This role aims to eliminate friction points for both human developers and autonomous agents leveraging the platform. The position involves leading improvements across APIs, SDKs, dashboards, consoles, documentation, onboarding, and server infrastructure. Close collaboration with product engineering, research, platform engineering, and developer relations is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the developer experience as a comprehensive product area, identifying and addressing bottlenecks across API contracts, dashboards, servers, or SDKs.
- Collaborate closely with platform engineering to influence API design before release, ensuring developer and agent perspectives are incorporated.
- Work alongside product engineering to enhance developer-facing dashboard features including playgrounds, API keys management, usage monitoring, request inspection, and webhook debugging.
- Enhance usability of the platform for autonomous agents by managing MCP server, agent onboarding flows, skills, and machine-readable interfaces, designing reference patterns and SDK primitives tailored for agentic workflows.
- Manage the suite of developer entry points including SDKs (Python, TypeScript, others as required), MCP server, skills, OpenAPI, and typed interfaces as an integrated portfolio focusing on composable workflows and asynchronous operation handling.
- Partner with Growth and Product teams to optimize the developer funnel from signup through first production call, addressing obstacles to engagement.
- Maintain strong opinions on API versioning, error handling, naming conventions, and breaking change policies, aiming for a developer experience on par with industry leaders such as Stripe.
Required Qualifications
- Over 4 years of software development experience, specifically with developer-facing products like SDKs, APIs, dashboards, or consoles actively used by external developers.
- Proficient as a full-stack engineer with expertise in TypeScript, React, Next.js on frontend and Python plus ideally Go or Rust on backend; capable of independently delivering complete features.
- Solid instincts and experience in API design including error formats, pagination strategies, asynchronous job handling, and managing breaking changes.
- Familiarity with the 2026 generation agent ecosystem including MCP and major agent runtimes, understanding challenges when AI systems interface with APIs and error messages.
- Proven track record shipping real external developer products rather than internal developer tools.
- Highly productive with demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality product engineering work efficiently without requiring managerial oversight.
Preferred Experience
- Experience from a developer platform organization where developer experience metrics strongly influenced product direction (e.g., Stripe, Vercel, Cloudflare).
- Contributed significantly to MCP server projects with real-world agent adoption.
- Familiarity with media-generation or other asynchronous, high-latency job-based APIs and associated UX challenges like polling, webhooks, partial results, or cost management.
- Publicly available work samples such as open source projects, technical writeups, or notable dashboards showcasing design and implementation taste.
Work Environment
The team operates with distributed offices in Freiburg and San Francisco, encouraging in-person collaboration at least two days per week or one full week every other week. Remote work is supported with a monthly in-person week and travel costs covered. The culture embraces obsession with quality, low ego collaboration, ambitious delivery, and kindness.
Compensation
The base annual salary for this full-time role ranges from €140,000 to €190,000, supplemented with equity participation.
