Role Overview
The Shift Engineer plays a vital role in ensuring the seamless and secure functioning of the hotel's engineering and maintenance operations during their work shift. This involves overseeing building systems, addressing maintenance demands promptly, resolving technical malfunctions, and upholding operational and safety standards consistent with hotel policies.
Primary Duties
- Supervise the daily performance of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and other engineering installations throughout the shift.
- Act swiftly to resolve maintenance calls, breakdowns, and urgent engineering challenges.
- Perform foundational diagnostics and arrange for corrective repairs to remedy technical faults effectively.
- Carry out routine checks of plant rooms, equipment, public spaces, guest rooms, and service areas.
- Assist with scheduled preventive maintenance and confirm that assigned tasks are executed correctly.
- Keep a watchful eye on critical systems and alert management of any anomalies, malfunctions, or safety risks.
- Liaise and coordinate effectively with other departments concerning maintenance and operational requirements.
- Address engineering concerns affecting guests efficiently to limit disruption.
- Maintain detailed documentation of maintenance interventions, inspections, faults, and shift transitions.
- Ensure proper operation of HVAC, electrical, water supply, fire safety, and other essential building systems.
- Support external vendors and contractors during maintenance, inspections, and related technical activities.
- Conduct all engineering work in compliance with hotel safety policies and relevant regulations.
- Provide thorough and clear handovers to incoming shifts, highlighting ongoing issues and critical updates.
- Contribute to energy and utility usage monitoring, reporting any irregularities in consumption or equipment performance.
- Undertake additional engineering tasks assigned by the Chief Engineer or supervisory staff.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Entry-level candidates are encouraged; 0 to 2 years of similar experience is preferred.
- Fundamental understanding of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and building system operations.
- Basic knowledge of both preventive and corrective maintenance approaches.
- Capability to diagnose and troubleshoot common equipment faults.
- Familiarity with engineering safety protocols and Health, Safety, and Environment standards.
- Proficient in English communication, both oral and written; Arabic language skills are a plus.
- Competent with computers, particularly Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and collaborative abilities.
- Willingness and flexibility to work varying schedules including shifts, weekends, holidays, and nights.
- Motivated, accountable, and keen to develop professionally in a hotel engineering context.
