Job description

About the Role

Join the newly established Server Ingress Security team dedicated to redesigning MongoDB Server’s ingress networking to enhance the security of MongoDB clusters. This team is responsible for developing the Atlas Network Protection layer, a set of high-performance, security-centric services that safeguard MongoDB’s pre-authentication attack surface and enable fast response to emerging threats. As a founding member, you will significantly impact this multi-year initiative.

Our team fosters a culture grounded in inclusivity, diversity, and cooperation, embodying MongoDB’s values such as intellectual curiosity, honesty, and teamwork over competition. We seek a dynamic leader to grow a fast-paced group focused on security and systems engineering to protect a widely used database at scale. Candidates should be based in Dublin or Cork to support our hybrid work model.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of 3 years managing software engineering teams, including responsibilities like recruitment, performance evaluation, career growth, and compensation management.
  • At least 8 years of experience developing production-grade systems software with large-scale, compiled backend codebases, preferably using Rust.
  • Additional expertise in performance profiling, network protocols, TLS, and managing network connections is highly valued.
  • Strong technical decision-making capabilities, particularly in security-sensitive or networking-related fields.
  • Customer-centric mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively across different teams to determine optimal solutions.
  • Proven skills in designing, coding, testing, maintaining, and operating critical software systems.
  • Advanced knowledge or professional experience in security or networking domains is a plus.
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring and supporting team members’ professional development and growth opportunities.
  • Commitment to nurturing a diverse and inclusive workplace that empowers engineers to excel.
  • A strong willingness and capacity for rapid learning in computer science, software engineering, and leadership.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of engineers, overseeing all facets of people management such as hiring, growth planning, performance evaluation, and compensation.
  • Take accountability for your team's outputs and successes.
  • Guide the design, development, and operational management of production-ready security services crafted in Rust, emphasizing security, reliability, efficiency, and excellence in operations.
  • Define and implement the team’s 12-month roadmap for the Atlas Network Protection layer.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Program Management, and Engineering leadership to prioritize and deliver new features.
  • Manage urgent security incidents and customer escalations, either directly or by leading these efforts.
  • Estimate task complexities, communicate timelines, and manage project risks.
  • Ensure smooth team operations by removing technical obstacles, managing cross-team dependencies, and focusing on team well-being and satisfaction.
  • Participate in strategic planning for organizational growth, including resource allocation, hiring strategies, and project assignments.

Performance Milestones

  • Within one month: Grasp the overarching architecture of the Atlas Network Protection layer, familiarize with ongoing projects, and establish relationships with stakeholders across Server, Atlas, and Product Security teams.
  • Within three months: Assume full leadership of team management, build trust with team members, manage daily operations, review new feature designs, navigate technical challenges, and recruit new engineers as needed.
  • Within six months: Establish yourself as a trusted leader, with team members seeking your guidance; take full ownership of the Ingress Security software components; drive planning and execution of key features aligned with annual goals.
  • Within twelve months: Complete annual performance and development reviews for team members; contribute to long-term strategic vision and planning for the Ingress Security stack; enhance team capabilities and throughput measurably.
