Within Grab Financial Service (GFin), the team is pioneering the future of payments. As Principal Software Engineer for Payments, you will spearhead the end-to-end engineering efforts for all payment mechanisms across the Grab ecosystem, including wallet transactions, online and offline payments, and merchant acquiring solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver highly available, low-latency, and accurate payment systems critical to operations.
- Define core payment platform architecture with clear domain boundaries, stable APIs, event interfaces, and version controls.
- Develop resilient integrations with card networks, banks, alternative payment methods (APMs), and real-time payment rails, ensuring tolerance to outages and changes.
- Promote and ensure principles of reliability, observability, security, compliance, scalability, operability, and cost-effectiveness in collaboration with SRE and Security teams; lead efforts in chaos testing, disaster recovery, and incident management.
- Oversee regional adaptations to accommodate different currencies, local regulations, and payment schemes, managing smooth rollouts and migrations.
- Drive pragmatic, data-informed decisions balancing impact, speed, and maintainability, aligning all stakeholders on trade-offs.
- Lead the creation and review of design documents and architecture proposals; set high standards for coding and testing; elevate service quality.
- Lead by example through prototyping and critical builds, mentor senior staff engineers, and propagate best engineering practices and culture at scale.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field is required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Over 10 years of software engineering experience including at least 5 years in senior or lead roles handling complex systems.
- Advanced expertise with AI tools to enhance coding and problem-solving efficiency.
- Proficiency in Java, Go, or Python with strong emphasis on disciplined coding and testing.
- Deep knowledge of distributed systems and microservices architecture including decomposition, reliability, and scalability.
- Extensive hands-on experience in payments domain covering authorization, capture, settlement, reconciliation, ledger management, payouts, refunds, disputes, and orchestration, ensuring correctness and idempotency.
- Strong skills in SQL and NoSQL databases, financial data modeling, data consistency, and reconciliation.
- Proven experience integrating with card schemes, banks, APMs, and real-time payment rails using established design patterns.
- Solid understanding of security and regulatory compliance such as PCI DSS, encryption/key management, privacy laws, and KYC/AML practices.
- Substantial experience working with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP, including multi-region deployment, multi-tenancy, and cost optimization.
- Familiarity with DevOps and SRE practices including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, observability, incident response, and service level objectives.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills to drive projects spanning multiple quarters and teams.
