Job description
Overview
This role is responsible for ensuring the quality and performance of the bank's credit portfolio by overseeing impairment provisioning, credit risk monitoring, and regulatory compliance. It also involves coordinating timely and reliable credit reporting for internal and external stakeholders while leading initiatives to improve portfolio analytics and automate reporting processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Regularly assess adequacy of loan loss provisions per Bank of Uganda Prudential Guidelines and IFRS9 impairment standards, recommending provision adjustments as needed.
- Maintain comprehensive provision schedules and conduct quarterly discounting of securities for non-performing loans (NPLs).
- Review loan account classifications and IFRS9 staging to ensure accuracy.
- Collaborate annually with Group Risk Analytics to recalibrate the IFRS9 impairment model.
- Track loan recoveries and report on write-off statistics regularly.
- Monitor portfolio concentrations by obligor, sector, product, cross-border exposure, and currency against approved limits.
- Ensure compliance with sector concentration limits, provision performance (PP) limits and metrics, and credit-related regulatory ratios.
- Review NPL portfolios and initiate appropriate write-offs, write-backs, and interest write-offs adhering to the In Duplum Rule.
- Guarantee accuracy of provisions and suspended interest bookings.
- Coordinate with Finance, Operations, Treasury, and Business Units to prepare credit-related reports and facilitate approval of IFRS9 staging override memos.
- Provide timely management information and portfolio performance reports to stakeholders supporting decision-making and regulatory compliance.
- Serve as the primary contact for portfolio and impairment issues during internal and external audits and reviews.
- Ensure accurate preparation and timely submission of regulatory returns, Group reports, and management information systems (MIS) data.
- Review and approve credit-related reports and prepare quarterly board papers, portfolio performance reports for Credit Risk Management, and monthly executive credit risk dashboards.
- Maintain core banking system data integrity for classification, risk ratings, sector allocation, and IFRS9 staging, ensuring all loan-related general ledger accounts reconcile properly.
- Oversee Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) reporting and conduct regular data cleansing of settled loan facilities.
- Lead key strategic and digital projects including the Bank of Uganda (BOU) Granular Data Integration Project and automation efforts within the Credit Risk Management department.
- Drive continuous improvements in portfolio reporting, data quality, IFRS9 governance, and credit risk monitoring processes.
- Manage and mentor Portfolio Analysts, setting performance goals, providing technical guidance, and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous development within the team.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or a related field.
- At least five years of experience in the banking sector, including a minimum of two years in a credit-focused role.
- Minimum two years’ experience specifically in portfolio analytics.
- Proficient in advanced MS Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint for analysis and reporting.
Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of Bank of Uganda Prudential Guidelines, IFRS9 accounting standards, and relevant financial legislation such as the Financial Institutions Act.
- Strong understanding of credit risk concepts and current banking sector trends.
- Ability to effectively perform credit administration tasks leading to consistently high-quality service delivery.
- Familiarity with banking policies, procedures, and compliance standards.
- Self-driven with excellent interpersonal and communication skills fostering teamwork and a customer-focused culture.
- Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment in problem-solving and decision-making related to credit administration.
- Effective people management skills and capacity to collaborate across departments.
