Job description

Overview

We are looking for a skilled Java Software Developer to join our team based in Winnersh, UK. This role focuses on supporting critical UK Government projects by developing and maintaining biometric and identity systems essential for public safety. The ideal candidate will have around 1.5 to 4 years of commercial Java experience, strong fundamentals, and a commitment to delivering secure, clean, and maintainable back-end code.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop secure back-end services using Java and Spring Boot frameworks.
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs following clean architecture principles and secure coding practices.
  • Produce high-quality, maintainable, and production-ready software that fulfills both functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Engage in requirements analysis, estimate efforts, and participate in technical design discussions.
  • Implement software development best practices including version control, peer code reviews, build processes, and testing.
  • Optimize application performance and address bug fixes, system enhancements, and improvements.
  • Work with PostgreSQL and associated database technologies to ensure efficient and reliable data handling.
  • Leverage and integrate existing frameworks and components appropriately to streamline development.
  • Document technical solutions clearly through comments and supplementary documentation.
  • Ensure software delivery adheres to security and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate effectively within a small engineering team and provide support to junior developers as needed.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

  • Possess 2 to 3 years of professional experience in Java development with a solid grasp of core Java concepts and object-oriented programming.
  • Familiar with Spring Boot and developing RESTful APIs.
  • Experience working with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
  • Proficient with version control systems, notably Git.
  • Comfortable engaging in live coding discussions during technical evaluations.
  • Eligible for SC and NPPV3 security clearance, which requires continuous UK residency for a minimum of 5 years. Note that past criminal convictions may impact clearance.
