Job description
About Anthropic
Anthropic is dedicated to developing AI systems that are reliable, interpretable, and steerable, aiming to ensure safety and benefit for both users and society broadly. The organization is composed of a rapidly expanding team of researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders collaborating to build responsible AI systems.
Role Overview
The Safety & Security Counsel for the EMEA region will act as the primary legal advisor regarding all matters involved in keeping both the Claude AI system and the company secure and compliant. This includes policy creation and enforcement, safeguarding research and development, misuse detection, managing sensitive escalations, threat intelligence, incident responses, product safety and security concerns, and engagement with safety and security-related regulations and policies. The role involves developing innovative legal frameworks rather than relying solely on pre-existing ones.
The individual will manage and expand a broad range of issues linked to Safeguards and Security, contribute to team capacity building, including utilizing Claude, and collaborate with multiple legal teams on cross-functional initiatives. This position is ideal for experienced attorneys interested in high-stakes, pioneering legal work situated at the core of responsible AI development.
Key Duties
- Collaborate with Safeguards policy teams to design and adjust usage policies across multiple risk domains such as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive hazards (CBRNE), cybersecurity, user welfare, widespread abuse and influence operations, and information distillation.
- Advise on enforcement practices covering account sanctions, appeal processes, enforcement systems, and thresholds.
- Provide counsel on sensitive cases and strategic reactions involving governments, regulators, law enforcement, and media.
- Offer guidance on investigations related to safety and security threat intelligence, bug bounty initiatives, red team strategies, and testing procedures.
- Support engineering and scientific teams in developing detection tools and mechanisms, including considerations of data governance and privacy.
- Act as the first-line legal advisor for safety and security incidents, delivering timely counsel during incident management and clarifying notification and reporting duties under various legal and contractual contexts.
- Create and maintain detailed crisis management materials, escalation steps, and legal self-help tools to enhance scaling of legal resources.
- Monitor developments in AI safety and security policies and regulations across applicable regions and integrate these insights into product guidance.
Fundamental Requirements
- Licensed to practice law in Ireland or an equivalent jurisdiction.
- Experience drafting legal documents and offering advisory guidance including risk evaluations for stakeholders.
- Knowledge of trust and safety, cybersecurity, privacy law, or platform regulation.
- Proven expertise dealing with urgent and complex issues like investigations, compliance, crisis management, or enforcement actions.
- Technical proficiency to comprehend system architectures, data flows, and the behavior of AI models.
- Experience directing multi-party responses to urgent events and transforming legal analysis into actionable instructions for technical and leadership teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of eight years legal experience preferably in-house or at a law firm supporting technology clients with security, trust & safety, or regulatory matters.
- Familiarity with content moderation, platform safety, user welfare, and crisis handling.
- Comfort working closely with highly technical teams including machine learning, safety research, infrastructure, and threat intelligence experts.
- Knowledge of AI systems and machine learning, or experience advising on innovative technology products.
- Strong decision-making ability under uncertain conditions.
- Collaborative, humble, hands-on approach with commitment to user protection and ethical AI usage.
