Principal Data Scientist

About the Team

The U.S. Technology team collaborates closely with Walmart's U.S. stores and eCommerce units to empower customers, associates, and merchants through innovative technology solutions across a wide product range. The team's key focus includes enhancing customer experience, store operations, and merchant tools by applying cutting-edge research in generative AI, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and optimization.

Our group comprises data scientists, application engineers, and product visionaries working jointly to design and implement AI-powered products that transform e-commerce. We build advanced machine-learning systems capable of fast A/B testing, leveraging GPU/CPU-based online inference, and supporting multi-market and multi-format operations.

Role and Responsibilities

• Apply and develop advanced statistical modeling techniques such as deep neural networks, Bayesian models, and optimization algorithms.
• Develop scalable and efficient models suited to Walmart’s extensive data and operational scale.
• Work collaboratively with business, engineering, and data science teams to deliver impactful, data-driven solutions.
• Define and monitor model performance metrics while assessing long-term business impacts.
• Communicate complex analytical insights and recommendations clearly to business stakeholders to influence decisions.

Qualifications and Experience

• PhD with over 10 years of relevant work experience, or Master’s degree with more than 12 years, or a Bachelor’s degree with over 14 years of relevant experience, preferably in Computer Science or another quantitative discipline.
• Advance continual improvement of machine learning practices by staying current with and contributing to ML research trends.
• Integrate data science models into business processes and establish best practices tailored for the retail sector.
• Mentor junior team members and manage multiple concurrent projects.
• Engage with academic, institutional, and vendor partners to infuse innovation into lab activities.
• Publish and present research at top-tier machine learning and AI conferences such as NIPS, ICML, AAAI, and COLT.
• Provide thought leadership and advisement to business units across stores and e-commerce regarding algorithm-driven strategies.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience with recommender systems and deep learning applications in computer vision.
• Familiarity with large language models (LLMs).
• Knowledge of the e-commerce sector.
