Position Overview
This role is for a Middle School Math Teacher committed to fostering a supportive, culturally responsive learning environment that promotes student engagement, growth, and well-being. The teacher will employ inquiry-based and differentiated instructional methods aligning with Common Core State Standards and the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum.
Core Responsibilities
- Create a welcoming atmosphere that cultivates student joy and belonging within Middle School.
- Develop a caring and culturally sensitive community within both advisory groups and classrooms, addressing students' physical, emotional, and intellectual needs.
- Utilize restorative practices to manage and support student behavior effectively.
- Plan lessons based on essential learning targets framed by standards and real-world contexts, using culturally responsive materials.
- Construct varied assessments—formative, summative, and self-guided—to provide consistent feedback and track student progress.
- Design engaging, collaborative, inquiry-driven, and differentiated learning experiences.
- Implement measurable, research-backed interventions and extensions tailored to diverse learner needs.
- Collaborate within Professional Learning Communities to plan curriculum, provide feedback, and engage in continuous professional development and reflection.
- Embrace co-teaching models and integrate interdisciplinary teaching methods as well as technology innovatively in daily instruction.
- Participate actively in extracurricular activities such as coaching, club sponsorships, field trips, community service projects, and extended learning opportunities beyond classroom hours.
- Maintain communication and availability with students and parents outside regular school hours.
Mathematics-Specific Duties
- Apply the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum effectively to align lessons with Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
- Use research-based teaching methods that promote positive mathematical identities and reasoning skills among students.
- Utilize assessment data and observations to provide equitable challenges and support to all learners.
- Engage students in math-related clubs and activities such as Math Counts or Math Olympiad.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field is required; a Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Possession of a teaching license or degree in education is mandatory.
- Preferably at least two years of full-time teaching experience.
- Experience with standards-based curricula is advantageous.
- Proficient verbal and written English communication skills.
- Comfortable using technology for instructional and administrative purposes.
Working Conditions and Expectations
- Faculty must sponsor or coach at least one extracurricular activity or sport each academic year, such as athletic teams or clubs.
- Attendance at professional learning days and participation in evening or weekend school events, including parent engagement nights, is mandatory.
