Software Development Manager, AWS DynamoDB

About the Role and Team

The AWS Utility Computing division pioneers innovations across foundational and cutting-edge cloud services, including Compute, Database, Storage, IoT, Platform, and Productivity Applications. As part of this team, you will engage with services supporting specialized security solutions for customers. This role concentrates on enhancing Amazon DynamoDB, a high-performance NoSQL key-value and document database managing over 100 million requests per second, trusted by global enterprises like Lyft, Airbnb, Samsung, Toyota, and Capital One.

Role Overview

We seek a hands-on engineering manager to direct a motivated engineering team building robust, highly scalable distributed systems. This opportunity allows you to lead the advancement of next-generation cloud database services while growing as a technical leader within a collaborative environment. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a dual passion for tackling complex technical problems and excelling in people management—focusing strongly on system reliability, availability, and operational excellence of a mission-critical service with sub-millisecond latency and extremely high uptime.

Responsibilities

• Lead and inspire engineering teams to build reliable, scalable distributed systems around DynamoDB.
• Recruit, mentor, and retain top engineering talent while managing daily performance and team dynamics.
• Create and implement product roadmaps using Agile methodologies, focusing on innovation and adding value atop existing services.
• Oversee technical project management, coordinating cross-team initiatives aligned with the roadmap.
• Drive operational best practices by leveraging metrics, monitoring, and alerts to enhance reliability and process efficiency.
• Foster a data-driven, fast-paced environment adaptable to dynamic technological challenges.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years managing engineering teams and at least 7 years of engineering experience.
• Over 8 years leading complex multi-tier web service development.
• Proficient with full software/hardware/network development lifecycles, including code standards, reviews, source control, builds, testing, certification, and live operations.
• Experience collaborating with product and program management teams.
• Preferred: Proven skills communicating with diverse audiences to gather requirements and present technical designs and strategy.
• Preferred: Experience hiring, mentoring, and developing software engineering teams to enhance productivity and skills.
