Position Overview
This role involves leading a skilled and distributed engineering team focused on the integration of Linux software with cutting-edge hardware platforms. The Engineering Manager will collaborate extensively with key silicon partners to optimize Ubuntu capabilities across the entire Linux stack, from kernel integration through to the user interface, covering PCs, IoT devices, and server platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and manage a global team of software engineers tasked with deploying high-quality Ubuntu integrations for contemporary IoT, PC, and server-class hardware.
- Provide strong technical leadership throughout the Linux stack, collaborating with engineering teams and technology partners to deliver hardware enablement, new functionalities, and enhanced performance.
- Establish and maintain robust relationships with commercial and technical partners to ensure alignment with business goals and successful delivery of projects.
- Monitor partner collaborations, ensuring timely completion of milestones while upholding rigorous standards for quality, reliability, and engineering excellence.
- Mentor and support engineers’ professional growth through continuous feedback, guidance, and leadership by example.
- Coordinate closely with internal engineering and product groups to synchronize technical architecture, product roadmaps, priorities, and execution strategies.
- Promote a collaborative, high-achieving engineering culture focused on continuous process improvements.
- Undertake international travel up to twice yearly for team and corporate events, typically for periods up to two weeks.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Hands-on professional experience with Linux distributions, particularly with Ubuntu or Debian systems, including Debian packaging skills.
- Background working with high-performance server hardware and/or modern PC and IoT hardware platforms.
- Proven track record in managing or technically guiding software development teams, emphasizing mentoring and performance enhancement.
- Comprehensive software engineering expertise enabling credible technical leadership over complex, multi-layered systems.
- Experience collaborating directly with customers or external partners to diagnose challenges, comprehend business objectives, and communicate technical solutions effectively.
- Familiarity with agile development practices and delivering projects within a collaborative engineering environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills facilitating cross-functional cooperation and trust-building across diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Fluent English communication skills, capable of conveying intricate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher education in a technology-related discipline.
- Resourceful and adaptable mindset, skilled in addressing a variety of complex problems within a dynamic work setting.
