Engineering Manager - Linux Hardware Enablement

Overview

This role offers leadership of a skilled and internationally distributed engineering team focused on integrating Linux software with cutting-edge hardware. The Engineering Manager will coordinate efforts with major silicon partners to optimize the Ubuntu operating system across the Linux stack, spanning kernel-level integration to desktop and user experience enhancements. The position demands a blend of people management, technical guidance, partner collaboration, and hands-on problem-solving across PC, Internet of Things (IoT), and server-grade platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a diverse, remote team responsible for delivering Ubuntu integrations on the latest IoT, PC, and server-class hardware.
• Provide strong technical direction for Linux stack developments, enabling hardware functionalities, introducing new features, and enhancing performance.
• Forge and maintain productive relationships with commercial and technology partners to align on project goals and delivery timelines.
• Manage partner relationships ensuring milestones are met punctually while upholding rigorous standards for quality, reliability, and engineering excellence.
• Mentor engineers through continuous feedback, career guidance, and by exemplifying leadership qualities.
• Collaborate closely with internal engineering and product teams to sync technical architecture, planning, and execution strategies.
• Drive a culture of cooperation and high performance, encouraging ongoing improvements in development workflows.
• Travel internationally up to twice yearly for company and team-related events, with trips typically lasting up to two weeks.

Requirements

• Proficient experience with Linux distributions, especially Ubuntu or Debian, including Debian packaging knowledge.
• Expertise working with high-end server hardware and/or modern PC, IoT, or comparable hardware systems.
• Proven experience in managing or technically leading software engineering teams, inclusive of coaching, mentoring, and fostering professional growth.
• Robust software engineering foundation with the capability to offer credible leadership over complex technical systems.
• Experience directly engaging with clients or external partners to resolve technical challenges, comprehend business objectives, and communicate practical solutions.
• Familiarity with agile software development practices and experience delivering products in a collaborative team environment.
• Detected strong skills in cross-team collaboration, with an aptitude for building trust and delivering results among multiple stakeholders.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, able to translate complex concepts for diverse audiences.
• A bachelor's degree or equivalent higher education, ideally in a technical or related field.
• Demonstrated resourcefulness, clarity in communication, and adaptability to navigate a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
