Android Software Engineer

About the Role

Toast develops advanced technology solutions to empower restaurants and local businesses to thrive in a digital environment, enabling owners to enhance operations, boost revenue, engage their clientele, and ensure employee satisfaction.

As a member of the Guest Engagement team, you will focus on creating innovative engagement features that attract new patrons to restaurants and convert them into loyal regular customers. Working closely with UX designers, product managers, and QA teams, you will leverage cutting-edge AI tools to make a meaningful impact on the customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and sustain high-performance, adaptable, and scalable Android applications running on Toast's POS hardware deployed across numerous restaurants.
• Deliver end-to-end feature development from initial design through deployment, performance monitoring, and iterative improvements based on live user feedback.
• Implement exceptional user experiences adhering to current best practices in Android development.
• Collaborate actively with team members to foster a culture of teamwork and shared success.
• Create products and capabilities that enable restaurants to offer outstanding guest service.
• Engage closely with Product, Design, and Engineering teams and participate actively in Agile processes.
• Work in conjunction with cross-functional engineering teams to elevate the Android platform experience at Toast.

Requirements

• 2 to 4 years of professional experience developing Android applications using Kotlin and/or Java, with a proven track record of shipping production-grade apps.
• Proficient with modern Android development tools and frameworks.
• Interest and enthusiasm for AI-assisted programming and language model-based tools like Claude Code, aiming to pioneer innovative workflows.
• Experience integrating backend systems through RESTful and GraphQL APIs, with the curiosity to explore full-stack development when necessary.
• Comfortable navigating ambiguity in requirements, practicing Agile methodologies, and delivering incrementally functional software.
• A passion for enhancing user satisfaction and observing real-world usage of delivered products.
• Strong foundation in software engineering principles including code quality, unit testing, and clean coding practices with openness to evolve processes utilizing AI tools.

Technology Stack

• Android applications developed in Java and Kotlin.
• Backend services implemented primarily in Java and Kotlin.
• Utilization of AI agentic tools such as Claude Code in daily development workflows.
• Persistence layers comprising PostgreSQL and DynamoDB databases.
• APIs based on REST and GraphQL, among other supportive technologies.

Work Environment

This is a hybrid role requiring two days per week presence at our Dublin office to support in-person collaboration.
