Yard Operator - Timaru

About the Role

McCain Foods in Timaru is seeking a dependable and proactive Yard Operator to join their team. This hands-on position requires confident forklift operation and strong communication, crucial for managing multiple priorities within a high-activity manufacturing site. The Yard Operator is responsible for ensuring safe, smooth material movement and collaborating closely with various departments such as Coldstore, Production, and Maintenance, alongside external drivers.

Key Duties

• Operate forklifts safely across yard and warehouse, including large capacity forklifts with specialized attachments.
• Manage receipt, storage, movement, and dispatch of materials while keeping inventory accurate.
• Coordinate yard activities like vehicle movements, waste and recycling collections, pallet control, and material handling.
• Utilize computerized inventory systems for stock and document management.
• Maintain clear communication with internal teams and external drivers to synchronize daily operations.
• Balance competing operational demands with a focus on safety, efficiency, and excellent customer service.
• Conduct routine forklift and equipment inspections and contribute to a safe workplace.
• Adhere to site rules and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.
• Escalate operational challenges proactively and seek assistance when needed.
• Support continuous improvements by maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant environment.

Candidate Requirements

• Proven forklift operation experience in warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, or industrial settings.
• Hold a current New Zealand Driver’s Licence and OSH Forklift Certificate.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to create productive relationships internally and externally.
• Capability to work independently as the sole Yard Operator during shifts.
• Strong multitasking aptitude and composure in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic computer proficiency for inventory and warehouse management software.
• Willing and able to work on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule (2 days 7am-7pm, 2 nights 7pm-7am, 4 days off).
• Unrestricted legal right to work in New Zealand.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in manufacturing, food production, or fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) environments.
• Familiarity with SAP, Warehouse Management Systems, or other inventory control software.
• Understanding of GMP compliance requirements.
