Utility Locator

Job Role Overview

The Utility Locator position involves detecting and marking underground utilities to facilitate safe excavation and construction work. Utilizing locating devices, maps, and work orders, the individual ensures accurate identification of underground infrastructure paths. This role is essential in preventing damage to utilities, promoting safety, and supporting operational teams through timely and precise service delivery.

Core Responsibilities

• Carry out underground utility locating in line with company, state, and utility standards.
• Interpret maps, prints, GIS records, and work directives to establish utility locations.
• Operate locating equipment such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to mark utilities accurately.
• Maintain thorough records of locating activities, including sketches, notes, photographs, GPS data, and completed work orders.
• Attend to routine, emergency, and high-priority locate requests, including re-marks.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, homeowners, utility providers, and internal teams.
• Ensure proper maintenance of tools, equipment, and company vehicles.
• Adhere strictly to OSHA, 811 guidelines, and state One-Call regulations for safety compliance.
• Report any errors in marking, risks of damage, safety concerns, or potential service issues promptly.
• Assist team members and field operations when required and undertake additional assigned duties or projects.

Performance Indicators

• Accuracy and quality of utility locating as evaluated by audits.
• Achieving zero preventable utility damages.
• Completing tasks in a timely manner as per ticket requirements.
• Following all safety protocols maintaining an incident-free record.
• Accuracy and completeness of documentation including photos and mapping verifications.
• Customer and contractor satisfaction levels.

Requirements

• Minimum educational qualification of high school diploma or GED.
• Preferred experience in utility locating, construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical sectors.
• Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and knowledge of underground utilities is advantageous.
• Possession of a valid driver's license is mandatory.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Regular work outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
• Exposure to construction zones, active traffic, and operational machinery.
• Tasks performed on both private and public rights-of-way.
• Availability for emergency or after-hours locate requests is expected occasionally.
• Interaction with contractors, homeowners, utility personnel, and project managers is standard.
• Daily communication with field supervisors, utility representatives, and internal crews.
• Physical capabilities include standing, walking, bending for extended durations, lifting up to 50 pounds, navigating trenches and uneven ground, handling locating tools, and visual/manual dexterity.

Safety Considerations

This role is safety-sensitive with responsibility for personal safety and that of others. Compliance with all safety rules, proper use of personal protective equipment, safe vehicle and equipment operation, valid certifications, regular safety trainings, reporting hazards, and passing drug/alcohol screenings are mandatory. Non-compliance may lead to disciplinary measures including termination.
