Utility Locator

Job Overview

ITG Communications LLC is recruiting a Utility Locator to accurately identify and mark underground utility lines to support safe excavation and construction endeavors. Working closely with maps, locating devices, and job orders, this role is crucial in safeguarding public safety and preventing utility-related damages.

Primary Responsibilities

• Conduct underground utility locating tasks aligning with company policies, state laws, and utility protocols.
• Interpret various documentation including maps, blueprints, GIS data, and work orders to trace utility routes.
• Utilize specialized locating equipment such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to mark utilities precisely.
• Keep detailed records of all locating activities through sketches, notes, photography, GPS logging, and completion reports.
• Handle standard, urgent, and priority locate requests, along with remapping assignments promptly.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, homeowners, utility providers, and team members to ensure clarity and coordination.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles in optimal condition.
• Adhere strictly to safety standards, including OSHA, 811 guidelines, and One-Call statutory requirements.
• Report any discrepancies, safety risks, potential damage hazards, or service issues immediately.
• Support colleagues and participate in other assignments or special projects as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum education: High school diploma or GED.
• Prior experience favored in utility locating, telecommunications, construction, gas, water, or electrical utilities.
• Understanding of One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground infrastructure is advantageous.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license is mandatory.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Regular outdoor work under different weather conditions.
• Exposure to construction sites, traffic, and operating machinery.
• Responsibilities may include work in trenches, confined spaces, or uneven terrain.
• Physical capability to stand, walk, bend extensively, carry loads up to 50 pounds, and operate hand-held tools and locating equipment.
• Potential for emergency or after-hours locate work.

Performance Metrics

• Accuracy and thoroughness of locates with quality control audits.
• Strive for zero utility damage incidents.
• Efficiency in completing tickets timely.
• Strict compliance with safety guidelines with no incidents.
• Accuracy in documentation including photographic evidence and mapping verifications.
• Positive feedback from customers and contractors.

Safety and Compliance

This role is safety-critical. Employees must prioritize their own and others' safety, comply fully with all safety policies including use of personal protective equipment, safe operation of vehicles and equipment, maintain necessary certifications, and participate in safety trainings. Drug and alcohol screenings and physical capability assessments are required. Failure to comply may lead to disciplinary action up to termination.
