Job Overview
Vannguard Utility Partners, Inc. is seeking dedicated and motivated Underground Utility Locators to join their team in Iowa City, IA. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who appreciate outdoor work and enjoy a degree of autonomy. Candidates will be trained to use specialized equipment and mapping tools to locate underground utilities and contribute actively to safety in excavation, landscaping, and construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a company vehicle from home directly to job sites following routine ticket requests, emergencies, and relocates.
- Utilize computer utility maps and locating equipment to identify underground cables, pipes, and utility lines such as electric, gas, and communication lines.
- Mark utility locations using paint and flags, and effectively communicate information to excavation teams and relevant authorities.
- Participate in after-hours emergency call rotation as required.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Possess basic computer proficiency; one year of computer experience preferred.
- Hold a valid driver’s license for the applicable state.
- Ability to manage workload independently and maintain timely communication with supervisors and clients.
- Commitment to working overtime when the schedule requires it.
- Willingness to comply with a drug-free workplace policy, including completing pre-employment drug screening.
Physical Requirements
- Drive extensive distances daily, ranging from 50 to over 300 miles depending on work location.
- Frequently enter and exit vehicles upwards of 50 times per day.
- Stand and walk long distances (more than 1 mile) across uneven terrain under any weather conditions.
- Lift or move weights between 50 to 150 pounds as needed.
- Endure outdoor work regardless of weather elements.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Preferred: At least one year of experience in utility locating and computer skills.
Additional Information
- The position includes a drug-free work environment.

- Work schedule includes 10-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with on-call and overtime availability.
