Transportation Assistant

Job Summary

This position involves planning, coordinating, and managing the transportation and shipment of materials and equipment, including hazardous items. The role requires interaction with customers to provide guidance on transportation and distribution services, tracking shipments, resolving issues, and preparing reports.

Key Responsibilities

• Organize and oversee shipments of materials and equipment, preparing relevant documentation including for hazardous materials.
• Advise and assist customers on all aspects of transportation and distribution functions at the DLA Distribution Depot.
• Track shipments, provide status updates, solve problems, and generate reports as requested.
• Determine the most efficient and cost-effective rates and routes for shipments domestically and internationally.
• Classify, rate, route, and manage the movement of a variety of commodities, including hazardous materials.
• Schedule shipping dates, coordinate pickups, and loading times for shipments to government activities both overseas and within the continental US.
• Authorize and verify invoice payments using automated systems.
• Calculate transportation costs and negotiate carrier rates as necessary.
• Review automated shipment documentation, correcting invalid or missing details as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Non-sensitive security clearance.
• Appointment contingent upon successful suitability and fitness determinations.
• Must be registered with Selective Service, if applicable.
• Must obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license and any other required certifications.
• Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 level related to transportation assistance tasks such as determining shipping routes, classifying and rating shipments, including hazardous materials.
• Physical demands include mostly sedentary work but occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, climbing ladders, standing for extended periods, and working in warehouse or refrigerated environments.
• Work environment includes office settings and possibly warehouse, secure or outdoor locations with potential exposure to hazardous substances or extreme temperatures.
• Completion of a medical examination prior to employment is required.

Education

Graduate education may be credited if directly related. Foreign education must be evaluated for US equivalency. Official or unofficial transcripts are required to support educational claims.

Additional Employment Terms

• Tour of duty is a fixed schedule with exempt status under Fair Labor Standards Act.
• Must sign a drug test consent and undergo pre-employment and random drug tests.
• Required to be a mission-essential employee and available to work during emergencies at designated or alternate locations.
• Subject to a 36-month overseas rotation agreement.
• Employees overseas are responsible for medical and dental expenses; access to military medical facilities is on a space-available reimbursable basis.
• DLA Germersheim is a remote site with the nearest military community 100 km away.
