Job description

About The Team

The Forward Deployed Engineering team at OpenAI collaborates closely with customers to transform research advances into practical production systems, bridging the gap between client delivery and core platform innovation.

Role Overview

This founding position as a Technical Deployment Lead (TDL) involves defining and managing OpenAI's complex system delivery to clients. You will be responsible for the entire lifecycle — development, shipment, and adoption of solutions. Your role includes translating business goals into detailed technical plans, overseeing the daily coordination across FDEs, Researchers, and Customer Engineers, and partnering with client teams to ensure delivery aligns with their objectives.

Though not a management position, you will have end-to-end ownership of delivery: embedding with customers to analyze workflows and success metrics, ensuring timely component delivery, and leading readiness and change management processes for adoption. You'll monitor milestones, handle dependencies and task sequencing, and guide projects from prototype to MVP to scale. Insights gained in the field will also be shared with Product and Research for strategic roadmap and priority setting.

Success Indicators

Success is fundamentally measured by impact — deployments that achieve tangible value aligned with customer goals, encourage adoption, and become integral to workflows. Other metrics include consistent on-time delivery with minimal revisions, creating reusable deployment patterns, sound judgment during pressure situations, and influencing product directions through field feedback.

Role Environment and Location

This role requires high autonomy and trust along with deep technical project management skills and a commitment to outcomes. It requires deep engagement with customer workflows and partnering to solve complex engineering challenges swiftly.

The position is based in Singapore with a hybrid schedule of three days onsite per week. Relocation support is provided, and travel demands range from 25% to 50%.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical delivery plans involving multiple interconnected workstreams, translating business objectives into actionable roadmaps with clearly defined milestones, dependencies, and acceptance benchmarks.
  • Manage daily engineering progress, coordinating across OpenAI’s teams and client groups, ensuring unimpeded progress, proper sequencing, and quick decisions on scope to maintain delivery momentum.
  • Work onsite with customer teams to implement production deployments and encourage adoption, mapping workflows, adjusting tools/integrations, and leading onboarding and change management efforts.
  • Collaborate with Product and Research to ensure alignment and timely completion of platform components and research initiatives that support deployment goals.
  • Develop and document reusable solution patterns and evaluations based on deployment experience and user feedback to enhance products and model development.
  • Define value propositions and ROI metrics, establishing hypotheses, baselines, and KPIs; conduct pre- and post-deployment performance measurement and report findings to executive sponsors.

Qualifications and Skills

  • At least seven years of leadership experience in customer-facing technical delivery roles.
  • Proven success in managing large, complex, high-pressure customer projects, preferably involving AI technology.
  • Ability to operate effectively within ambiguous and evolving environments by simplifying complex issues.
  • Aptitude for balancing a comprehensive system-level view with execution-specific details, including workflow analysis, constraint mapping, architectural design, and bridging abstract problems to concrete systems.
  • Strategic thinker who can identify patterns, draw connections among deployments, and develop scalable, reusable solutions aligned with customer needs.
  • Strong technical acumen and excellent judgment in prioritizing and sequencing work, confident in discussing implementation details and architecture trade-offs.
  • Experience delivering AI or Large Language Model (LLM) systems with understanding of solution design, integration, and common production challenges.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical decisions into understandable language for executives and transform strategy into practical technical execution.
  • Willingness and ability to spend significant time onsite with customers (often 25–50% travel or more) to expedite delivery.
  • Expertise in at least one major industry sector—such as healthcare, energy, financial services, semiconductors, or IT—to enhance solution framing and credibility.
