Position Overview

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager by assisting with store operations including staffing, inventory control, merchandising, administrative duties, and maintaining a safe and well-maintained environment. This role serves as a developmental step for candidates preparing to take on full Store Manager responsibilities and is temporary in nature.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support recruiting and staffing efforts to maintain adequate store personnel.
  • Help with merchandising activities such as stocking, staging, pricing, and organizing merchandise according to company standards and Store Manager directions.
  • Assist with inventory management including damage processing, markdowns, scanning procedures, paperwork, and conducting inventories.
  • Follow ordering protocols to maintain or improve in-stock levels.
  • Deliver excellent customer service leadership and set a positive example.
  • Model adherence to company policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
  • Contribute to store opening and closing activities.
  • Ensure secure handling and deposit of company funds as required.
  • Support financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, and compliance with security procedures.
  • Help keep the store clean, stocked, and safe for both customers and employees.
  • Act as the store leader in the absence of the Store Manager.
  • Review performance statements to identify sales trends, labor, profitability, shrinkage, and errors for improvement opportunities.
  • Complete required documentation timely and accurately.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents including diagrams, safety instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
  • Understanding cash handling procedures including cashier accountability and deposit control.
  • Competency with IBM cash register functions and report generation.
  • Knowledge of inventory control and merchandising standards.
  • Familiarity with cash, facility, and safety control policies including key and deposit management.
  • Experience or understanding of recruitment, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination processes with compliance considerations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving skills applicable in situations with limited standardization.
  • Some locations may prefer bilingual Spanish speakers.

Experience and Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
  • Retail experience of one year is preferred, particularly for external applicants.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Frequent walking and standing during shifts.
  • Regular bending, stooping, and kneeling for stocking and check-out duties.
  • Handling merchandise and equipment including scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, carts, and dollies.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds.
  • Occasional climbing using ladders.
  • Some driving is necessary to perform bank deposits, attend meetings, and visit other stores, which may require personal transportation.
  • Work environment is fast-paced with moderate noise levels.
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions occurs occasionally.
  • Some travel is required with occasional overnight stays.
