Position Summary

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to play a critical role in the design, development, and delivery of software within the Navico Group PD&E division. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on producing dependable, high-quality products while working closely with cross-functional teams. You will contribute to software architecture, implementation, and problem-solving, also mentoring junior engineers to promote engineering best practices. Experience with firmware and embedded systems will be especially valued as product and team needs evolve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain robust software systems and applications.
  • Participate actively in technical design discussions and perform thorough code reviews.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver resilient software solutions.
  • Ensure software quality through testing, automation, debugging, and adherence to best engineering practices.
  • Identify and resolve complex software and system-level issues effectively.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers and promote a collaborative, high-quality engineering culture.
  • Contribute to architecture decisions and technical strategy as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively on software, firmware, and hardware integration as product requirements evolve.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in software development and engineering.
  • Strong expertise in software design, development, and debugging methodologies.
  • Proficiency in programming with C and C++ languages.
  • Experience using build tools such as Make and CMake.
  • Familiarity with Qt/QML or comparable frameworks.
  • Development experience targeting Linux, iOS, Android, and/or Windows platforms.
  • Knowledge of CAN bus communication protocols.
  • Experience working with IoT technologies such as ThingsBoard, MQTT, and Mender.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work cohesively in team environments.
  • Bonus: Experience with Zephyr RTOS, hardware debugging, using oscilloscopes and multimeters, and interpreting electronic schematics.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in firmware development or low-level embedded programming.
  • Skill in hardware–software integration and embedded environment debugging.
  • Knowledge of embedded Linux systems.
  • Understanding of bootloaders, firmware update processes, and embedded security principles.
  • Experience developing Linux kernel drivers.
  • Involvement in hardware bring-up from initial stages.
  • Familiarity with networking technologies including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, TCP/IP, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices using tools like Azure DevOps and Jenkins.
  • Familiarity with containerization tools such as Docker.
  • Experience working in Agile software development environments.

Working Conditions

  • This role is highly technical and hands-on.
  • May require on-water testing of prototypes and new products.
  • Main work location is in the New Zealand office with occasional collaboration with international colleagues.
