Senior Software Engineer - Server Ingress Networking Security (Rust)

Join the Server Ingress Security team dedicated to rearchitecting MongoDB Server's ingress networking to significantly enhance the security of MongoDB clusters. This pioneering team is responsible for developing the Atlas Network Protection layer—a collection of high-performance, security-focused services designed to reinforce MongoDB’s pre-authentication attack surface and enable rapid responses to emerging threats. We seek highly skilled Senior Engineers to become founding members and drive critical contributions to our long-term strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain production-ready security services in Rust, emphasizing security, correctness, performance, and operational excellence.
• Create ingress networking and security solutions that maintain the security, availability, and efficiency of a database service.
• Identify and resolve test failures and performance issues promptly.
• Lead development efforts and manage projects related to Ingress Security features and initiatives.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams including Server, Atlas, Drivers, SRE, and Product Security to integrate the Atlas Network Protection layer within the broader MongoDB ecosystem.
• Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering leadership to shape the team’s roadmap.

Candidate Profile

• Over five years of experience in production-quality systems software development.
• Exposure to extensive backend or compiled codebases and performance-critical applications, preferably using Rust.
• Experience in security-focused or networking-adjacent domains is advantageous.
• Solid understanding of systems fundamentals such as multi-threaded programming and performance profiling.
• Knowledge of network protocols, TLS, and connection lifecycle management is a plus.
• Familiarity with security concepts including attack surface reduction, input validation, memory safety, and defense-in-depth strategies.
• Excellent communication skills with a strong inclination towards collaboration.
• Effective time management abilities and realistic project complexity estimation.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience with strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture. Interest in high-availability, security-critical systems theories and practices.

Success Metrics

• Within one month: Grasp high-level Atlas Network Protection architecture, establish development environment, and resolve initial bugs.
• Within three months: Make substantial Rust code contributions, review code, and participate in design reviews.
• Within six months: Independently lead feature development and mentor new team members.
• Within twelve months: Drive impactful enhancements to the Ingress Security stack’s security, performance, or operational features and influence the long-term technical roadmap.
