Job description

About SteerAI

SteerAI is a cutting-edge autonomous mobility technology company backed by VentureOne, the technology commercialization branch of the Advanced Technology Research Council. Powered by the Technology Innovation Institute’s AI-driven autonomy platform, SteerAI specializes in converting industrial vehicles into autonomous machines capable of handling complex off-road missions, enhancing logistical and defense operations, and safeguarding workforce assets.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Robotics Engineer with expertise in Visual Localization to spearhead the creation of localization systems for autonomous robotics functioning in environments where GNSS signals are unavailable, such as desert terrains. The candidate must possess deep knowledge of Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO), visual SLAM, and sensor fusion methodologies, with hands-on experience in filtering techniques. The role demands adaptability to challenging conditions and collaboration across teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop robust camera-based SLAM and VIO algorithms optimized for sparse-feature environments like deserts.
  • Integrate data from monocular and stereo cameras along with IMU sensors for dependable pose estimation in GNSS-denied settings.
  • Implement and fine-tune filtering methods such as Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), and Multi-State Constraint Kalman Filter (MSCKF) to achieve high localization accuracy.
  • Conduct benchmarking and monitor localization drift over extended operations in low-feature terrains.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to embed visual localization systems with navigation and control modules.
  • Continuously research and update knowledge on the latest visual localization and inertial navigation techniques applicable to extreme or planetary-like environments.

Qualifications

  • Proven expertise in Visual SLAM and Visual-Inertial Odometry frameworks (e.g., VINS-Fusion, ORB-SLAM, ROVIO).
  • Strong proficiency in sensor fusion integrating camera, IMU, and optionally wheel odometry data.
  • Solid understanding and practical experience with filtering algorithms (EKF, UKF, Particle Filters) and optimization methods such as nonlinear least squares and bundle adjustment.
  • Advanced programming skills in C++ and Python, along with practical knowledge of ROS/ROS2 development environments.
  • Experience with camera calibration, feature tracking, and optimization within visual perception pipelines.
  • Capability in 3D mapping, motion estimation, and modeling inertial sensors.
  • Awareness of the localization obstacles faced in GNSS-denied or planetary-like contexts.
  • Familiarity with hardware sensors including IMUs, stereo/monocular cameras, and visual-inertial units.
