Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to enhance and scale the backbone systems underpinning Midnite across multiple markets and regions. This senior, individual contributor position focuses on the core platform—understanding interactions between systems, refining boundaries and reliability, and establishing technical foundations that enable teams to deliver faster and more safely.

The role involves working extensively with backend and platform infrastructure, closely collaborating with the Australia team and the global Platform group. Unlike roles centered solely on product features, this position emphasizes foundational system work including service boundaries, data isolation, interface design, reliability, deployment, and scalability.

This opportunity is suited for professionals capable of following broad guidance while navigating ambiguity autonomously, and driving complex technical projects without exhaustive upfront details.

Technical Environment

Our platform is primarily developed in Python and hosted on AWS, utilizing technologies such as Flask/FastAPI, Pytest, Mypy, Docker, PostgreSQL, SQS/Kafka, S3, and Terraform with daily deployments.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, construct, and refine backend and platform systems supporting Midnite's core product.
• Address multifaceted platform challenges related to scalability, reliability, service isolation, and geographic readiness.
• Define and enhance clean interfaces and boundaries across services and data flows.
• Develop systems to facilitate multi-region operations and future market expansions.
• Enhance observability, optimize deployment methods, boost performance, and elevate operational maturity.
• Collaborate on application-layer systems and platform infrastructure, and support deeper infrastructure topics when required.
• Contribute through production-quality coding, conducting reviews, and engaging in technical design as part of daily tasks.
• Identify potential failure points, mitigate risks, and bolster platform resilience in tandem with growing usage.

Collaboration and Ownership

• Execute high-level technical directions independently and reliably drive tasks to completion.
• Partner with leadership and the global Platform team on architectural and implementation decisions.
• Interact with product engineering teams to address platform changes affecting existing products.
• Communicate effectively across multiple time zones, proactively raising risks and blockers.
• Foster a culture of strong ownership within the Australia engineering team.
• Apply practical judgment to technical trade-offs, balancing speed, robustness, and maintainability.

Required Qualifications and Traits

• Proven senior-level expertise in backend or platform engineering.
• Experience independently managing and delivering technically complex projects.
• Strong proficiency in Python or comparable languages such as Go, Rust, Java, or Scala.
• Adaptability to quickly learn new languages and systems.
• Deep understanding of distributed system principles, scalability concerns, and architectural decision-making.
• Knowledge of microservices architecture, service boundaries, data consistency models, and reliability engineering.
• Comfortable working across both application-layer systems and underlying platform or infrastructure components.
• Excellent communication abilities and experience collaborating across time zones.
• High ownership mindset, exceptional judgment, and confidence working in ambiguous situations.
