Rotating Machinery Technician

Job Overview

This position is responsible for preventive maintenance, repair, overhaul, and troubleshooting of rotating machinery such as steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, pumps, and their auxiliary systems. The technician must have thorough knowledge of their dedicated equipment and a general understanding of the related industrial process to effectively execute maintenance duties.

Primary Duties

• Independently perform daily routine and non-routine maintenance tasks under regular supervision, ensuring timely completion with adherence to quality standards.
• Provide verbal and documented updates to supervisors regarding work status for effective oversight of progress against schedules.
• Obtain necessary cold work permits to safely and compliantly undertake specified tasks.
• Lead toolbox meetings to review planned work activities and verify tool and safety equipment readiness before commencement.
• Identify, document, and communicate equipment issues or anomalies promptly to immediate supervisors to prevent failures.
• Strictly comply with established safety protocols, including lock out/tag out (LOTO), equipment isolation, hazardous area requirements, confined space procedures, hazardous materials handling, and safe use of lifting devices to maintain a secure workplace.
• Utilize precision measurement instruments accurately—including micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, feeler gauges, and bore gauges—to check tolerances and confirm proper assembly.
• Carry out basic rigging and lifting tasks according to approved plans to safely maneuver equipment components using slings, shackles, chain blocks, and hoists.
• Supervise contractors during shutdowns to ensure specific job completion.
• Perform routine condition assessments of rotating equipment via vibration analysis, temperature monitoring, and lubrication inspections.
• Execute alignment procedures such as soft foot correction, preliminary and final checks using dial gauges and laser alignment tools.
• Assist with dismantling and assembling equipment, carefully handling bearings, seals, couplings, and other precision parts per protocols.
• Conduct cleaning, inspection, and minor refurbishment (e.g., filters, strainers, oil systems, bearing housings) to uphold reliability.
• Support lubrication processes including oil changes, grease application, and sampling for analysis while ensuring proper material usage.
• Diagnose equipment irregularities including unusual vibrations, noises, temperature spikes, or leaks, reporting findings promptly.
• Manage storage and preservation of spare parts, especially precision components, to ensure readiness.
• Maintain workshop tools and instruments, ensuring calibration is up to date.
• Follow OEM maintenance instructions and equipment-specific procedures during servicing.
• Assist engineers and senior technicians in major maintenance events like overhauls, turnarounds, and shutdowns.
• Document maintenance activities, materials consumed, and equipment conditions accurately using SAP work notifications and feedback.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum educational qualification of High School Diploma with an additional 2 years Diploma in a relevant technical discipline.
• At least 5 years of hands-on experience in maintenance within Fertilizer, Petrochemical, Chemical, or Oil & Gas industries.
• Strong ability to work independently as well as in teams, coupled with solid communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent knowledge of maintenance practices for steam and gas turbines, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, couplings, multiple bearing types, mechanical and dry gas seals, various valve types, heat exchangers, pressure relief devices, and lubricants including their functions and selection criteria.
• Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Competency in using a variety of precision measuring devices accurately.
