Job description

Position Overview

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) seeks a Railroad Flagger in Meridian, MS. This full-time position involves safeguarding workers on railway tracks by directing train movements while complying with federal safety regulations. The role encompasses supporting various rail operations including major railroads, regional short lines, transit authorities, state transport projects, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage site activities effectively to ensure safe operations
  • Engage in clear and consistent communication with dispatchers, train operators, railroad personnel, and contractors
  • Lead safety briefings prior to commencing work
  • Adhere to and enforce all applicable railroad, federal, and state safety rules
  • Verify contractors' compliance with necessary training certifications
  • Identify and report any violations of safety procedures
  • Prepare and submit daily activity reports documenting work progress and safety
  • Maintain on-track safety in accordance with federal guidelines

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in railroad environments such as Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, Railroad Suppliers, Contractors, or Consulting firms; Maintenance Of Way (MOW) department experience preferred
  • Proficient with basic computer applications including Citrix, email, telephony, and messaging platforms
  • Comfortable operating Android-based tablets and smartphones
  • Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication capabilities
  • Familiarity with railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety principles
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional client relationships
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, often for extended durations
  • Completion of requisite federal, client, and company safety training courses
  • Clear English communication skills in speaking, reading, and writing
  • Capability to stand for prolonged periods, walk on uneven terrain, and lift weights up to 50 pounds
  • Good vision including near, far, color, and peripheral awareness
  • Adaptability to work in varied outdoor conditions including extreme temperatures, dust, and noise

Work Environment

  • Field-based work predominantly outdoors
  • Significant amount of travel required, often involving long-distance driving
