Overview

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a full-time Railroad Flagger based in Huntington, WV. This critical role involves ensuring worker safety on rail tracks by managing train movements in compliance with federal regulations. The position supports various railroad operations including large Class 1 railroads, regional short lines, transit systems, state transportation projects, and contractors. Travel is a significant component, typically ranging from 50% to 85% of the time.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate on-site activities to maintain operational safety.
  • Facilitate effective, clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
  • Conduct safety briefings prior to commencement of work.
  • Strictly adhere to and enforce all relevant railroad, state, and federal safety protocols.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with training requirements.
  • Identify and promptly address safety violations.
  • Prepare detailed daily reports documenting work activities.
  • Ensure continuous on-track safety in accordance with federal standards.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of two years experience in railroad environments such as Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State Department of Transportation Rail Divisions, railroad suppliers, contractors, or consultants, preferably within Maintenance Of Way (MOW) departments.
  • Proficiency with computers including Citrix, email, mobile phones, and texting applications.
  • Comfortable using Android tablets and smartphones for work-related tasks.
  • Strong organizational capabilities and keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety standards.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional client relationships.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively for long durations, sometimes stretching to months.
  • Commitment to completing mandatory federal, client, and company safety training.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Primarily field-based work in a varied outdoor environment.
  • Must be proficient in English communication (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Capable of traveling or driving long distances regularly.
  • Physically able to stand for prolonged periods and walk across uneven terrain.
  • Good near, far, color, and peripheral vision necessary.
  • Ability to endure extreme weather conditions ranging from hot to cold.
  • Comfortable working in dusty and noisy settings.
  • Capable of lifting weights up to 50 pounds.
