Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a dedicated Railroad Flagger based in Baton Rouge, LA. This full-time position involves ensuring the safety of workers on train tracks by managing train movements in compliance with federal safety regulations. The role supports diverse rail entities including major railroads, regional short lines, transit systems, state transportation projects, and contractors.
Key Responsibilities
- Organize and coordinate job site activities effectively
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors
- Lead safety briefings before commencement of work
- Observe and enforce railroad, state, and federal safety rules rigorously
- Verify contractors’ compliance with training standards
- Detect and correct any safety violations on site
- Prepare detailed daily reports on ongoing work activities
- Ensure track safety adherence following federal regulations
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum two years’ experience affiliated with Class 1 Railroads, regional short lines, transit systems, State DOT rail divisions, railroad suppliers, contractors, or consultants, preferably within Maintenance Of Way (MOW) operations
- Proficient with basic computer applications including Citrix, email, telephony, and messaging apps
- Comfortable operating Android tablets and smartphones
- Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written communication capabilities in English
- Solid understanding of railroad engineering, construction, design, and safety principles
- Excellent relationship-building skills with clients and stakeholders
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively, often for extended periods (50-85% travel expected)
- Commitment to completing all mandatory federal, client, and company training programs
Working Conditions
- Primarily field-based role
- Must communicate fluently in English (reading, writing, speaking)
- Ability to travel or drive long distances frequently
- Physically able to stand for prolonged durations and navigate uneven terrain
- Good visual acuity including near, distance, color, and peripheral vision
- Willingness to work in challenging environments with extreme temperatures, dust, and noise
- Physical capability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
